G&Ls and 1/4 sawn necks

So, they have a $100 upgrade option for a 1/4 sawn neck.. yet every G&L Ive seen of late has a 1/4 sawn neck regardless.

Is it just standard these days? Is it worth paying the extra when most likely you'll get one anyway, has anyone seen a G&L that DIDN'T have a 1/4 sawn neck?

I have L2500 with quartersawn. But please look for L2500 in market and most of them are flatsawn.

My 1991 Pedulla Series II bolt on has a 1/4 sawn neck.
Very stable and no issues in 21 years.

I've played 2 and seen the spec sheets, neither had 1/4 sawn spec'd.. Hence my asking..

for a while this was the standard neck. only in the last couple of years have they gone back to flatsawn as standard with quartersawn as an option.

I've got a custom ordered ASAT (not by me) and I don't believe it has a 1/4 sawn neck. I'll take a look at it later on tonight.

My three G&Ls are all older - 1980s - and they are all flatsawn. I didn't even know they offered quarter-sawn as an option!

Also, that's a $100 list option. You won't pay that much since most dealers will discount the price. I usually get about 33% off list.

As a builder, I have never noticed any difference in stability between a q-sawn neck blank and a flat sawn. As long as the grain is running straight along the length of the neck and it is properly dried it should be pretty stable.

Personally I wouldn't pay more for a q-sawn neck, because I like the way a flat sawn aesthetically more than a q-sawn.

My 2010 JB was a custom order, and just came with a quartersawn neck that I didn't specify. My understanding was that, at the time, G&L would use quartersawn wood if it could be found at a reasonable price, but would use flatsawn otherwise. So, I figured I just got lucky, but maybe it was standard at the time. My G&L's from 2006 and 2007 both came with flatsawn necks. I haven't noticed much if any difference in setup stability with my JB's neck, but for whatever reason it feels incredibly solid. Over on the Fender Forum, I've read that some Strat players avoid quartersawn necks because they brighten the tone too much, but I have no experience there.

A number of new G&Ls have popped up that didn't have the quarter sawn option listed, yet had quarter sawn necks.

My guess is that if you don't pay for the upgrade, they'll just use whatever neck blank is on hand, which may either flat or quarter sawn.

My current US G&Ls all are quartersawn but my first L2K ten years back was not.
Tributes are never quartersawn, to my knowledge.

Left : Quartersawn (vertical growth lines, perpendicular to fretboard plane)
Right : Flatsawn (lateral growth lines, parallel to fretboard plane)

Anybody know what that little spot is off to the right of the low E tuner? My quartersawn SB-2 has it as well as a lot of pictures I have seen of other basses. Thinking it issome kind of internal ID at G&L

It's a G&L thing, but I have no idea what it signifies.
