Double Bass G string hunt

I have to commend all of you. Three pages in and still not a single stupid double entendre joke...just helpful replies. This can't possibly be the internet.

I taught orchestral strings and conducted orchestras for 31 years in public school. The father of one of my students called me one afternoon and said, "My daughter's G string is loose. Can you help her tighten it?" I had to bite my inner cheek so hard to keep from laughing that my eyes were watering.

yeah I was waiting on it too haha. Anyway, it seems like OP has a good setup but I’ll add what I really like on my bass (old German flatback).
E: spirocore mitt
A: spirocore weich
D: spirocore weich
G: zyex med

This setup has been the best I’ve found for my playing style, and I have been able to raise the string height a bit. My bass is louder than it’s ever been, and I can hear all the notes in a group. Also though it’s a little tinny arco, it works great under the bow.

Nice setup! Are these the S42 Spiros or 3885? Do you know? Thanks

The 4/4 mittle G at 3/4 mensure is slightly lower tension than the 3/4 Weich G at 3/4 tension according to the chart.

It doesn't feel lower tension, it feels meatier, but not higher tension.

I’m wondering how the mittel can be lower tension, unless you are comparing the manufacturer data for 4/4 strings at 4/4 length, vs 3/4 strings at 3/4 length? I remember a chart on here purportedly showing tensions of all the spiros at one common string length, and the mittels all being predictably higher tension than all the weichs, string for string.

Honestly I do not know. They are certainly not new strings, with the exception of the Zyex G med I bought new. I would assume they are 3/4 size (3885 I think?). I am also unsure how old these spirocores are, likely a few years of use on them. I did clean them good before installing.

So...after all this I think that maybe I ended up with something good:
It's Spiro Weichs 3885 on the E+A, Evah Solo D and Eudoxa plain gut G. I recorded a little sample for you guys to tell me what you think BUT I also gigged with this set last night and it sounded and felt really good.I think the plain gut G and the low tension Evah on the D compliment each other nicely...

glad something worked out for you. I've been toying with a change in upright strings from my perpetual set, maybe just as an excuse to inspire some more upright practice. Got an email from a company about a new hybrid set coming out that I am lucky enough to be asked to test. Gonna be hard to beat the perpetuals but we'll see.

All I would offer is i know tons of people doing spiro light EAD with evah weich with some luck. personally cuz I'm scared of gut strings, I'd do that, or a mittle G, or learn to love the full spiro set.

Have you ever tried a mixed set with Spiro E +A and guts on top ? Or something similar ?
