Double Bass G string hunt

Have you ever tried a mixed set with Spiro E +A and guts on top ? Or something similar ?

probably a while ago. I’m not a fan of mixing sets unless we’re talking the same string but different gauges like spiros with a heavy E. I always notice the jump from the mixed brands. I’ve tried most setups out there in my experimentation days but found either Spiro mediums or perpetuals was best for me

I’m thankful there’s other cats out there like me in the same boat with the G string, and thankful we have a place to share this info! I’ve also got the 3885 3/4 weich on the bottom three, and am still experimenting w the G. Oliv on there now, probably the best feeling, and great sounding but the tuning.. have a spiro 4/4 mittel id like to try after reading the comments here. I wouldn’t worry too much about the oliv unwinding if your careful putting it on and don’t swap out too much. Man that perpetual stark could be just the ticket with a thicker and soft feel and tuning stability of steel.
Happy thanksgiving bass bros!!

So...after all this I think that maybe I ended up with something good:
It's Spiro Weichs 3885 on the E+A, Evah Solo D and Eudoxa plain gut G. I recorded a little sample for you guys to tell me what you think BUT I also gigged with this set last night and it sounded and felt really good.I think the plain gut G and the low tension Evah on the D compliment each other nicely...
@Trivolis, I heard your old samples with Chorda CH. They sounded great. I have to ask is there a reason why you didn´t try CH Chordas with Spiros or at least CH G which is a great string?

What was it that made you want to change the Evah G string for something else in the first place? What was it that you didn't like?

Sorry, I just saw this. If you’re still interested, the thing that I was looking for was a darker, less sustaining G string. It’s mostly an issue amplified. But….it also had to sound decent with the bow. I do enough bowing gigs for that to matter.

Anyhow, the oliv G is probably the best compromise of the ones I tried, although I didn’t find it that much better than the Evah weich G for pizz with the amp, and the Evah G bows better for me. So I ended up buying a new set of Evah weichs and I’m happy for now. My bass is pretty bright and mid-rangy, it’s a smallish flat back juzek, so I need dark strings to balance it. Spiros would probably not work for me.

You’re in Greece (I think) so it’s not practical but I do have an oliv G I’d be happy to sell, it does have a bit of unwinding near the nut. I don’t know how long it would last but it would be good for someone who wanted to try one.

Thanks for the kind words...I don't have these anymore, that's the reason. I would definately have tried the G. The D didn't really work on my bass with my setup.
In the meantime I've gone to an all plain gut setup...go figure...

Thanks for the offer, very kind of yours..but I've been running an all plain gut setup (minus the E string) for the last month so I will pass on the offer.
