Gallien Krueger Club. GK Rules !

Sorry, I'm using a Neo 410. I always keep the contour all the way CCW. Learned that rather quickly. I think my main issue is the fact that I cut mids so much on my amp. I'll try your suggestions. I usually control my master volume with the input volume and keepy woofer and boost around 2 to 3 o'clock. I have to keep the db pad engaged unfortunately because I use active basses mostly and I'll see the clip warning light flash too much for my comfort level.

Hey 1001 users, I'm trying to get some advice of guys using P basses with this amp. How are you getting your P to totally cut through the mix. I mean CUT through. It sits really nice in the mix, but doesn't want to cut through. What are you setting your 1001's to to be totally prominent in the mix?? I have a Squier P modded with active EMG-PAX's in it.
When I switch to my P-bass, it's because I want to do a better job of sitting in the mix, rather than dominating it.

That said, make sure the 5-string switch is off, and take a look at the usual culprits:
- Do you have too much bass or low mids?
- Is the Contour set too high?

Especially if you're using flats or tapewounds, you're going to need a boost in the upper mids, to put a nice point on the initial note attack.

It's funny you say you have trouble cutting through with P bass...I have a P with 700rb and it was too much cutting through....The mids plus p bass mids were a honky awful overload...I have my contour at noon and my mids 1030 and I have no trouble cutting through when playing in band....If I really want to cut contour goes off but I'm a root note player...I'm not a noodler...so it works ok for me....Once I found out the flat settings on my amp...thx BTW guys...I put knobs there and was mid nightmare...who the hell thinks that sounds good with a P bass...not saying cutting all mids sounds good....but boosting isn't good either...sounds so unnatural

Much of the different perception you all have about same bass (P-Bass) and same amp (GK 700RB) comes from the speakers. Speakers make a huge difference in sound so that probably explains why your experiences are so different.

Of course...but it's not like my eden 212 pumps mids and I'm trying to back them out....My cab is a even sounding cab...it's not XLT that have mid bump...its XST....even with even sounding cab I pull out mids....I feel the Contour fattens up sound nicely at noon....anymore and it gets too boomy mushy weird. Contour off and it sounds like a thin awful practice amp with a mallard duck inside

The 700RB is also a little mid-reinforcing so together with the P-bass and a neutral cab, that means you need a bit of contour to compensate. Maybe other people are using bassy cabs and do not really need that compensation.
I use either a pair of Aguilar GS112 or a Schroeder 1212 and the response is extremely different. With the Schroeder I also use contour a bit over noon. With the Aguilars I reduce it to 9 o'clock.

Aguilar sounds less mid heavy...I would like that too....A lot of these cabs have mid bumps which has I hate with P bass....J bass it's probably fine as it's more scooped already...but I've always been turned off by people who say Co tour sucks on a P bass and prefer lots o mids...yuck

Well I'm using a Neo 410 so I don't need the boom. I keep it set to 4 string, contour all the CCW and the mids at noon. The mids are slightly bumped that way right?? The bass and treble are around 2 o'clock. Maybe I need to bump the bass down a bit as well. As God as my witness, I'm determined to get my P dominant in the mix. Perfect word for it, dominant.

The guys said that 1oclock on mids is flat..so if you want to dominate...I guess turn to 2 or higher...man how can you handle that quacking of your p bass at those mid levels. ..haha...Also maybe turn down bass a little...

Another data point:
2x12 cabinet with Delta's and a tweeter, 72' stock Pbass, and either 400 RB or MB500

EQ pretty close to noon with a small bump at high mids; some rooms require pulling some low end for me (and occasionally making up the bottom with a bump with low miss)

I never use the contour control unless I'm looking for a scooped mid sound similar to an SWR or how many guys set a Trace Elliot head; this never works for me in a R&B / Rock band; does sound cool to practice with sometimes.

Ironically, this amp allows me to hear the bass more clearly and at a lower output (with the same other gear and in the same clubs) than a 7-Pro or TH500.

Maybe too much boost causing a loss of cut through?

Contour is just a tool, and a very useful one I would say. You use it if the result fits your taste, music style, band, etc. ... otherwise you don't. Integrism (even anti-contur integrism in this case) is never good ;-)

What's that I'm feeling right now? Oh yeah, JEALOUSY!! That is showin' up LIKE A BOSS!! :D

Very nice!

Thank You...
I never need all of them at once of course.
But I could if I wanted to ;)

Cheers

Couldn't resist. ..just pieced this together, looking forward to trying it out on Thursday

Thanks for all the tips my GK brethren. I give them all a shot. It's obvious I've been scooping the hell out of my mids on the head keeping them at noon then bumping the treble and bass. I'm going to back the bass down to about noon and bump the high mid to 3 o'clock and low mid to maybe about the same for my P. I'm not sure about the boost being at 3 o'clock. Does anyone know, could that be part of the issue too?

You're not cutting the hell out of your mids at noon and no contour......just a very little....I'm a cutting mid maniac...boost at noon and up adds volume....I think when you start cranking the pre gain volume and use master as volume the boost is affected more....but you have to get to certain volume Levels with pre amp to hear it

I can't turn my boost up past noon or I'm distorting in a bad way. On another subject I know I've read it before but gregmon79 didnt you have the faceplate rattling on your cab at one time? How'd you fix it? My 410 neo is fine but my 212 neo is sounding a bit vibrational (?)

No that wasn't me, sorry. I would think some strategic placing of double sided sticky tape would work for that though.

I keep my input level no higher than 10 or 11 o'clock with the boost and woofer at 3 o'clock. That's loud! Even with the db pad engaged. Also, my amp is a 1001, not the 700.

Woops. Yeah mines the 700rb II. Might be why...less headroom. I'll try to scour around for techniques on silencing a bit of the rattle.
