Dang, everytime I start thinking I don't need a 412 Neo and a big head, I read something like this...
Do you think the 1001RB-II or the 700RB-II did better with the 412? I was starting to think the Legacy 800 would be better, but I already have a good Class D head (Mesa TT-800) so now I think I need a big RB.
Also, welcome to Talkbass
THanks for the Welcome!
well I play heavy rock , Punk , Funk , Pop n Metal , so YMMV ... but ... I play using fingers, picks, slap , etc.
A 700RB + Neo 412 is my favorite GK rig. ( pictured there in my profile photo)
I like to push the power section of the RB's pretty hard, and the one I found to do that well , and not gas out ( had enough headroom) was the 700rb-II , to me that one is the sweet spot of the RB's . I liked the 1001rb , but it seemed a bit less warm than the 700 ,but the difference was subtle. If you want more pure clean tone, then get the 1001, but if you want more grunt, grind and angry quack, thats easy to get by pushing the lower watt RB's hard.
The class D Gk's match the tone print of the RB's , but there is something slightly different in the feel to me.
and I had to get the MB800 before I felt something close , the MB500 doesn't get quite there , the snarl is a bit different.
The feel of the Class D's is just a bit smoother , compared to the more aggressive delivery of the RB's , there's more of a "shaking" with the note delivery of an RB, which is why I want to get a Fusion 800s and a 700RB-II , because then I can use the pre on the Fusion , and the Power section of the RB, and of course have a backup power section ready if needed.
in comparison ,The Fusion 550 is an awesome amp , there's just a certain heft in the tone that can't be taken out ,
It was the least sounding GK amp out of all of them that I've tried , but still a super awesome tone, plus I had 2 and had issues with both , so I reverted back to a 700rb. I always wondered why Bob never just made a simple RB amp with that tube pre in the front , minus the robot knobs.
If GK came out with a 700RBF , I would risk pissing off my wife to buy that one ;-)
