Gallien-Krueger MB2-500

Yes, but truthfully, that kind of board work/manufacturing is virtually identical no matter where its done. Its all being done by virtually the same pick and place machines whether in the Far East, the EU, Mexico or the US.

+1

My understanding is that B&O sells an IP license for large scale OEM vendors. So the amp modules could be (and are) built most anywhere.

What does "well" mean specifically?

Not to be an a$$, but what you are asking is kind of silly. The head will physically work with any cab. How it sounds is a matter of pure, 100%, opinion.
He's looking for opinions, not an unreasonable thing to do around here.

IMO a cab that is slightly low-deficient would benefit from this head. I've got a couple of Avatar Delta 210 cabs that are notoriously shy in the lows. The MB² makes them sound huge, even with the bass knob at 10:00 and the rest boosted to 2:00....no contour.

Exactly my logic that the GK will work nicely with my Schroeder 10+R cab. But with Low and Low-mid boost, the F1 is impressive as well.

Fair enough.

It's my opinion that opinions sometimes do more harm than good. The TB opinion bandwagon has a tendency to snowball. I just wanted to help the guy build a more structured question that might produce more meaningful opinions.

What are your thoughts on the Schroeder Mini 12 Light paired with the MB2? What about the Mini 15? I'm thinking about the 4 ohm cabs. Anything like this that I order will be done without hearing it in person first so thanks for the help.

Likely a good pair but haven't tried yet.
Meinen Schroeder are punchy midrange affairs.
The GK was warm and bassy.
Yum but lots to be done EQ and such.

I think I understand why some people think the GK mb2-500
has too much low end!!!!

It finally hit me during all my a/b'ing with boxes. My Bergantino
HT112 had much more bass extension with the GK than the
LMII. Spec's wise, and eq points wise, it should be the other
way around... BUT!!
Both the 1001rb and 700rb have a "String Bass" push button.
When engaged, this adds about +11 db at 20hz. You have the
option of using it or not.
I believe (my opinion) GK eq'd this amp with the "String Bass"
eq effect on. Perhaps because there wasn't any more space
for another button to switch it off and on, so they figured it
would be good to have a very small, powerfull head, with a
huge sound. As a result, the amp will be a killer with small
boxes or bass shy boxes. This is a VERY nice amp!

Maybe Mr.G will substantiate my opinion, or tell me I'm full of
reptile refuse. Whadda ya think Mr. Gallien?

I doubt this very highly. That switch/circuit was a big mistake IMO. 20 hz was/is well below the tuning of GK cabs - or anybody else's for that matter - therefore it caused uncontrolled cone excursion. You could see it - I did. It is a headroom sucker as well and when I tried the MBSquared it was efficient. Nope. I love the subwoofer sound of the 20hz-40hz but it sucks wattage and most speakers can't handle it. A smarter move would be a high pass filter rolling off everything down there unless you have a subwoofer, crossover, and extra amp. If it's below the tuned frequency of a ported cab it is a power draw and speaker flapper - speaking of flapping... :hiding:

He's already commented on it actually. He said that the fact that the presence control on other GK amps adds a fair amount of top-end, even when disengaged that the lack of it on the MB2-500 creates a noticeably darker sound. According to him (it's his company, so I'll take his word for it) it's not that the MB2-500 has excessive low-end, it's that it's not as bright as other GK amps. The lack of high end makes your ear think it's hearing tons of low end. My A/B comparison of the MB2-500 to my 2001RB really confirms this to my ears as the high end on the 2001RB is much more musical.

I believe the "string bass" eq only affects the low end, not the
upper end. I took the spec's directly from the 1001/700rb
manual. Again, I could really hear the effect with my
Berg HT112. It made it sound more like an IP112.
