Gallien-Krueger MB800

I had the same problem, I play in a lot of rooms that are from the colo mining era circa 1881 with very suspect wiring, so i bought the carvin power conditioner and its dead silent now. And i think the class d gear is more sensitive to power surges as well causing some of the cutting out issues. I highly recomend the carvin, great features and delivered for less than $200.

Yep. Used the power conditioner I have all my studio gear plugged into and problem solved . . .

So I've had the head for a week now and I dig it even more than when it arrived. After a few test runs (with different bands) I have to say this thing is definitely has the GK sound and pretty much nails the vibe of the 1001RB-II but, dare I say, with more headroom and bottom end. The fans are noisier than the RB's, but not a hassle whatsoever.

One thing though . . . I'm still getting used to the dimensions of this thing looks wise! It's so small! (or in Pol.Corr. terms "compact"). The rack ears just look funny (a detachable option would have been cool, but I'm not complaining). I guess I got used to the more 'imposing' look of my 1001RB-II . . . Hmmm?? Maybe GK should think about an empty traditional chassis with a slot in the middle to put this little brute inside ... nah!

No way , I love that i can put in my laptop back pack, and then blow the minds of the sound guys that snicker at "that cute little amp" shuts em right up!

I know, I know. Just messing around . . . the portability is just incredible and yes, people are floored when they hear it.

It goes something like this . . . .

"Oh! look at that cute little thing!" *giggles* . . . (powers up) RAAAAAAAWWWR!!! "HOLY SH$!!! that thing's vicious!!!"

The Fusion 800 isn't available yet, I know.

But does this look like maybe basically the correct order for tone with the MB800 being in-your-face & sizzlier, the Streamliner 900 being the tubey god, & the Fusion 800 fitting in between them (but leaning closer to the Streamliner 900, maybe pretty close)?

I've had both the MBFusion500 (and MB800), and the Streamliner, and they're nothing at all alike.
The MBFusion is much more like the MB800, with "a little of the edge knocked off," but very clearly in the same tone family.
IMO

+1...exactly. The 'fusion' models of the MB series have just a touch of 'tube warmth' and a bit less of what most people call the 'GK grind'... that aggressive, upper mid range and super upper treble extension.

The Streamliner is meant to emulate and all tube amp, and is a totally different thing... super interactive tone controls (like some old school tube amps), round warm bottom, very tubey top end, and a more relaxed upper mid response.

O.K., thanks. Sounds like there's little if any reason to have both an MB800 & Fusion 800 (whenever they come out). Just pick what you like better, a little more aggressiveness or a little more touch of tube warmth. But it could make a lot of sense to have either an MB800 or Fusion 800 & a GB Streamliner 900?

They are different enough that, for me, I just didn't like the other extreme out of those two.
Lots of folks do though.

If you can swing it, there's no reason not to, they're really quite different tools, that do different things.

"Honey, I have to have pliers, and a hammer. Same thing."

Just be prepared to donate to The Compensatory Jewelry Fund...:>/

I have been wanting something with more grit or grind for certain gigs. Sounds like the MB800 might be my ticket.

I'm certainly digging mine. Previously had the GB Shuttle 9.0, Carvin BX500, TC RH750 but this GK MB800 is scratching the itch nicely. I end up rolling a lot of the high end off though, I don't need that much grind. And I hardly use its volume, I think I could have gotten by with the MB500 but its nice to have if I need it. One day I need to hook it up to two cabs to see what happens :)

Sorry to dig up an old thread but my question has almost been answered here, so I'm firing away.

I'm selling my GK700rb/210 combo because it's just too much to load in amongst a sea of mic stands and stools in the church I play at. I'm looking to resurect my old SWR 1x12 monitor and an old 1x12 Carvin driver in a third party ported box. I think the SWR is rated for 250 watts and imagine the Carvin no better. Both are 8 ohms.

For church, I'd use just the SWR monitor and micro head, going direct to the FOH. Then for small to medium gigs, stack the SWR on top of the Carvin. Both large gigs (did a 9,500 seat civic center last year), bring my trusty Eden 410XLT. Having the extra horses available to push the Eden would be nice.

Would the MB 800, or 800 Fusion be controllable enough at low volumes with just one 12" cab to keep from frying the cab?

Thanks. I've had the same equipment for 12 years and it's stunning how things have changed from the good ol' days.

Thanks Jarrett! I love the idea of hanging the mb off the back of the monitor, or even on a mic stand!

I'd go for the 500 watter, but that wouldn't get the 8 ohm Eden going for larger gigs, I'm afraid.

Just got my MB800 a couple of days ago. Really digging the sound and the power. Mine is a bit hissy, even with the mute on it's prob twice as much as my Shuttlemax 9.2 through a neoX212. I've read some guys have the hiss, while others say it's dead quiet. It's not a deal breaker for me, but if given the choice, obviously I'd prefer dead quiet. I've set the gain and worked the master, and vice versa, and found a little difference. For my money, I just want to make sure I have the best unit I can get, ya know?
