I play a lot of blues and country-rock, and I use Ampeg amps. They just work better for what I do, but like everybody else says you need to decide what you want works best for what you do.

OP should maybe try some Genz Benz gear? I'm sure someone can give you a summary of the tonal characteristics.
I am trying to decide between which brand of amp to get. I can't test them in a store near me so I would have to order online.
My question is the difference in tone between GK and Ampeg. Is one better for a certain types of music? How would you describe the difference in tone with all other things equal?
i.e. same speaker size, same watts, same bass guitar, same room, same player.
The mian reasons have already been answered:
"To me the GK tone is cleaner, tighter with more defined mids and highs. The Ampeg tone is a bit gritty with slightly fatter lows"
"Ampeg is very round and smooth but a little bit dark imo, and GK is much more aggressive sounding, a lot cleaner and has way more high mids"
I also use a VT Bass with my 1001RB II.....
Have you found settings on your VT that let you cut like the 1001RB does on its own. I'm still playing with my VT/1001RB combo to find the right setting.
Get the GK, and a VT Bass pedal. Then you will have both at the press of a switch.
A-B report.
Took my daughter to a rock show this past weekend at a local large venue. The first band's bass player played a Precision through an Svt-810 rig. I could feel him but could hardly hear the bass notes. The Headliner band's bass player played a Jazz bass through a GK rig what looked to be probably a 1001rb through a GK 412 cab. I could not only feel bass, I could hear it also. Smooth, clear and loud.
That boils down to the soundman running the PA.
And if those bass players swapped rigs out completely, you would be saying the exact opposite.
