GASing for a P-Bass

Since I read angelcrushers thread on P basses, I find myself wanting one pretty bad.

My dilema(s) is/are

Do I need one?
I am convinced I do. Lol!

Also, I feel I am a high enough caliber of a player that I need an American one.
I'm feeling kind of snotty and spoiled by thinking this.

My funds are quiet enough for an American made one, but they are enough for a MIM.

The urge to just buy the MIM and be done is pretty strong, but I want a one time purchase. A Pbass that will grow old with me. Ya know?

Classic '50s series. Sunburst. Done. :)

Seriously I'm gassing for one of these highly rated MIM '50s. $749 US. I just found one used listed for $500 CDN with a case, but it's fiesta red. Pretty sure I'm gonna pull the trigger because it's such a great deal. Try to snag it for $450. Up here with tax a bass and case would be $1250 CDN.

Now as for you, when you have saved enough for a USA precision, they will still be available. They're not going to be discontinued. So wait. Or finance. Put the cash you have down and pay interest. Generally a bad plan but we are talking a beautiful bass, not a crap leather sofa or stupid fridge.

I would love to have a red one. Not a fan of the sunburst ones.

Budget is $500(ish)

Which I can grab a MIM (used) for that, but not quiet an American.

Very distracting.
The Mexican classic and deluxe series are EXCELLENT instruments and anyone who says they are not has either not tried them in the last 10 years or has a severe case of snobitis (and I say this owning an MIA PBass). Anyway - these go used in that price-range all the time and you will be VERY happy with them with no regrets. The MIAs are definitely nice, but $500 is a long way from an American, you could be playing you higher end MIM for a while instead of waiting.

Just because someone posts their thoughts on what everyone "needs" to do a certain thing doesn't make it true.
Are you a young player just starting and looking to be a studio/tour first call guy? If so, I guess you must buy a P bass.
Save up and get a used American P and put flats on it and sound like everyone else. That's what studios want.
I thought about getting a Pino Signature P bass for a while, thinking if I were to be respected I better be able to play everything on a P. I'm glad I didn't. I like sounding like me, but I have that luxury as I'm not trying to break into the biz.

If you have $500, go shopping for a long time for used P basses and play as many as you can. Figure out exactly what you want. Don't have any preconceived notions, because you never know what will grab you.

If you find a used one that is out of your range (most likely $500 is a little low), just put the bass on layaway. It's worth the extra money to get the best one you can. You should be able to find some real used gems in the $700-$900 range.

People want what they want. If you want a Ric, Fender, Alembic or a SX. I wanted an American Fender Jazz. Played 4 to find "the one". I recommend you find P-Basses in your price range that you can try out first. Get the one that feels best. My problem is I found a P-Bass I really like. usually the necks put me off them but I saw one in the local GC that had a honey burst finish. Had to try it. The neck worked for me. $800 for a American P seems reasonable to me. Just need to find $800.

Recently I bought MIM 60th anniversary Pbass. I like it a lot. had tons of MIM MIJ MIA Jazz and Precision basses, this one is certainly one of the best. If you find good MIM, I am sure it will work for you.
