GB Rip off?

Tired of great tone? Need to get rid off all that sweet bottom end and lower mid-range puch that all bassists desire?

Need an amp that clips out at gig volumes on every single transient?

We have the answer.

It's the GBE750. By Genz Benz.

It's the best way to make your '77 Jazz sound like a drumstick hitting a wet cardboard box in the dunny.

Best of all, it weighs a ton and can buckle rack ears in a thrice!

What more could you want?

Buy one and change your vibe.

I had the exact same issues with my eden wt550.

If the OP has questions or problems, I can think of clearer ways of presenting it. We reallly are always here to assist in sorting this kind of thing out....

Not like you're getting beaten up by the majority, bro ;) Good on you for worrying about it enough to post this, but I wouldn't .
I get what your saying, but it's not the OP said that he didn't like GB product. He called them a ripoff. Adding a question mark doesn't make it any less insulting.

I don't own a single piece of GB gear. However, after reading a ton of threads on TB, their products are comparable to their competitors and their customer service is top notch. Which is why they're on my short list for when I finally purchase a micro amp.

Well personally, I wouldn't have worded my post the way he did, but I definitely can sympathize with his frustration. No one likes to buy something for that price and not be happy with it. I've actually tried 3 or 4 different models of GB (not this particular model) that were hooked up at the store to some pretty decent cabs, and I too had the feeling that the amps sounded not too far from his description. To each his own ear. ;)

Wierd thread indeed. It's entirely possible something's wrong with it, nothing's perfect. User error or crap cabs could just as easily be a culprit.

I'm not a huge genz guy but they certainly do have a good rep. Their little shuttles/micro heads are showing up all over the place here...seem quite popular with middle aged, older and female players. Because of this I fully excpected some 600's and 750's popping up for sale from folks who upgraded so to speak. It hasn't happened. We have a pretty active used gear market locally, to the point that with some patience, I haven't had to go to ebay or even tb classifieds for anything I need and people are holding on to these things, I suspect there's a reason for that.

With the wording of the original post, it seems like trying to stir up $*!¿.

While I can't say that I agree with the OP's method of posting, I can say that back in 2007 I went through 3 GBE750's before giving up on them. Two arrived damaged, which certainly isn't Genz-Benz's fault. One arrived in what looked like flawless condition, but ultimately couldn't deliver the goods in terms of power or tone through the same cabinets that worked great with several other heads and pre/power setups of comparable power.

Genz seems like a very reputable company with outstanding customer service, but ultimately they just weren't for me.

Perhaps the OP got one of the 3 that I returned :p

If the OP's post here preceded any contact with GB I'd say let him suffer his own self, he doesn't deserve a decent product or good customer support.

Full disclosure - I own and love a GB NEOX 212T.

Sounds as if you may that particular amp may be damaged somehow.. I would contact GENZ CS to see if you can have that amp checked out.. The 750 is not as loud as GBE1200 that i have .. But very similar in design and I have not experienced what you claim.. It is clear and articulate and does shake a room depending on what cabs you are using... So what cabs are you running and at what LOAD ?
You may want to check your EFFECTS LOOP Ins and Outs and be sure they are clean and not dusty...

Right...well that's why you don't just buy amps willy nilly. It certainly wasn't Genz Benz building a "ripoff" amp...it was Genz Benz building an amp he didn't care for. Some people like some amps, some don't. That's how it go.

Hey

Thanks for all your comments / advice. I didn't expect this many.

I am a little miffed that seem to have I bought an amp which doesn't appear to do what the pre-amble in the manual specified. Perhaps I have bought a damaged one?

I don't mean to offend anyone with this post (esp. Mr. Genzler - I take back that 'rip off' suggestion) and if I have, my deepest apologies. I'm a committed and busy bassist and I'm not here to start fights. I just thought I'd present a post a little out of the ordinary, and as I produce advertisements as a day gig, the style I presented it in reflects that. I actually would have written the same thing if any other brand of amp had presented me with the same problems I'm experiencing...which in my 27 years of playing, none have.

I'll post details of the many tests which I've done to this date, and there have been several....but I will say at this stage all my loads have been correct (the cabs I've used are a Trace 410, Genz XB 610, Ampeg 610 and a Markbass 410 - none in combination as they're all 4 ohm boxes), I've looked at the mounting and condition of the electronics, and I have used no eq, save rolling off the top end. Cables are all good, tube is new, input gain is correct, power flex is set to 4-8 ohm, effects loop is clean, in fact the amp is in perfect working order.

It sounds great in my studio, I just don't have the confidence to gig with it.

But I should have explained my issue, in less facetious terms, to the manufacturer. Not an on-line community.

Cheers

*note - no alcohol was involved*

I don't think anything is wrong with the amp. I think your ears just don't like the sound. I'm in the same boat. I've tried several GB amps and tried to like them but they just don't work for me.

Anyhow, I think some people will appreciate your follow-up. And I'm sorry the amp isn't working out for you. Get your money back and try another brand.
