GC New bass damage... thoughts?

This is also a periodic reminder to the TB community that if you live close enough to an actual GC location, ALWAYS ship to store, not your home. It will make any potential return issues MUCH MUCH easier

I think they do. MF and Guitar Center are one in the same. They wouldn't share with Sam Ash, though, as they are a direct competitor.

Maybe my celebrity just triggered a run-up in BTB747 demand? Nice to think that's the case, at least.

For a $1000 instrument, I would definitely send it back. The discount just doesn't justify living with that damage. If it was a $500 bass with that damage and even $100 off I might deal with it.

Only if you get it at a price for used, but with a full warranty. I have had two basses 15 and 34 years, between the two them, the combined dames doesn't even come close to all that.

Side question - do all the big retailers draw from the same inventory or something? 3 days ago when I ordered this bass, all the retailers showed inventory ready to ship. Now, all are showing back order.... it’s a bit odd to me that everyone would suddenly run out of stock on such a niche product in a 3 day span.

A lot of the bigger retailers pull inventory data from the manufacturers, so when you "in stock" at 3 different sites, there's a good chance that they're pulling the inventory of the manufacturer and presenting it as their own.

i've seen thousands of basses in GC stores, and not one of them was that damaged. i've bought many used basses, too, that i've usually paid between 50% and 60% of new price, and none could compare to the damage on that one.

i'd return it.

I guess I mean do the big retailers - MF, SA, and GC - all share inventory across each other to some extent? E.g., would MF draw from GC inventory for some products?

of our last 2 purchases from MF, both actually shipped from GC. sam ash isn't part of their network.

The damage on the neck would greatly decrease my physical enjoyment of playing the instrument. The damage around the truss rod screw make me question what kind of dummy was monkeying with that. It would be a no for me.

I'd accept all of that on a used instrument if the price was right (assuming there's no unseen damage to the neck/truss/tuners/electronics).

That doesn't look quite new to me. I wonder if it was a customer return or a trade in? The 747 is a more unique instrument that I've never seen stocked as new in a store taking up floor space, maybe in their warehouse. I'd return that asap.

If that bass - with those photos - were listed here in the classifieds, would you have paid the same price that you gave to GC? If the answer is no, then it goes back.

Follow the golden rule of retail (don't be a jerk to the staff) and they'll probably do right by you. Return policies exist for this reason.

I just received a btb747 from GC. Ordered online... apparently there was only 1 in the entire country that GC had, so they had to ship me one that was sitting in a store. The guy from the store called me and warned me about "shop damage" to it, so I was at least expecting it.

Got the bass today, damage was a bit more than I had expected. See photos.

I'm on the fence about this one. I got an additional managers' discount for the damage; all told (after the already-discounted price I paid + the additional discount) it'll be like $800 for the "new" bass. I'm wondering what other folks might do in this situation.

Second, I'm on the fence about the bass itself. Any suggestions on what I need to do to make sure that I don't get hit with a "wear and tear" charge from GC if I decide to return it altogether?

I would absolutely send that back. No reason to keep that instrument. That's a regular BTB. There should be plenty of those available via other sites/stores, if not GC. And if not that EXACT one, there are several BTB models.

BTBs are nice though. Don't let this behavior from GC steer you away from a BTB.

No, not all, but GC, MF, and a couple others are all part of the same entity.
