I own a rick. I actually don't love how they look, but they play and sound amazing, so I don't dwell on it.
Yeah, I get why the bass is loved, just not the looks. And some really love the look
I beat the hell out of one of those for the better part of 20 years. Never once did it let me down on a gig. It was sort of the "better Polytone" combo at the time and it was a tank. (Tanks for the memories?)
To the OP- I showed up for an audition once for a blues road gig with my only bass at the time, a Steinberger XL2A. As soon as I pulled it out of the bag the BL said, "I don't know if I like that bass." I asked her to, you know, "Maybe wait and see if I can play it or not."
I've seen the chödehammer before, yes, it's awesome. Best thing to happen to my life. And yeah I know what a choad is.
The "orange" never really bothered me. Hell, my favorite 18 space shock mounted rack is big and orange. We lovingly call it "The Pumpkin", and I can spot that thing back stage from a mile away! It never gets lost. That thing is so ugly, people find me, just to give it back.
I will admit, however, that I have a bad prejudice about the Orange brand. In my area, the Orange dealer is a pawn shop franchise that also sells low level MI music gear. I never see the brand in wild and can only assume it's been relegated to the bedrooms and man-caves of high school and dad band wanna-be's. My personal perception of the brand is that at one time in past, it may have been a highly sought after hand-wired amp brand being produced out of someone's garage, but that some conglomerate purchased the name in a leveraged buy out and is now being mass produced in a low cost factory in some Asian country, and it's now being sold in pawn shops. All or none of that may be true. I'm not going to research it out. I don't care. I'm not going to be purchasing any of it. That is my perception of the brand. I do not go around screaming it to the world (unless you count this! lol!) solicited or unsolicited. FWIW my perception of BC Rich is almost exactly the same.
Now before anyone goes jumping to Orange's defense, if you like it, rock it! You know the phrase? If it sounds good, it is good. If I'm ever looking for a new amp, I may look into the brand out of spite, if nothing else!
Yep! When I was young and looked like Kip Winger, my gear loved me! Now that I'm fat and bald, my gear hides in shame.I'm on stage. I can't imagine any gear that would look worse.
The only amps with aesthetics that make me go ack are Markbass and the Peavey-Trace line. Although, the Peavey SuperMegaUltra is a strangely repulsive box to me too...

I don't like- or think it's cool-, ugly gear. I also think the relic thing is stupid. I also think kids eating laundry pods are stupid. That's my opinion, and I'm sticking.
They're a nice sounding and playing bass, but every time I see one I think of Tim Curry in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Those ugly Mark Bass yellow amps and cabs.
I hate the way my number one looks. Hated it for years. Plays amazing and sounds amazing. I tried to change some thing around. Maybe a pick guard change, but I'm only gonna spill beer sweat and maybe some blood on it. So alas, this ugly rig is the one for me. Now I won't buy something I don't like the look of unless I play it first and really like it.
