Geddy GAS, Solved!

Hey guys, I've wanted a Geddy for years but just couldn't justify dishing out $600-700+ used. So I went with a cheaper alternative. I scored an AllParts B&B maple neck for $100 from Music Go Round, it was installed already so I had to plug and sand the mounting holes. Also had to fit a nut for it, but that was easy too. Picked up a used SX body with bridge and shielded it with copper foil tape when I got it.

Got a set of pups off of a Geddy that are in great shape from a fellow TB'er for $50. The pickguard is parchment, I like that better than the bright white. Gives it a little character too IMO. Control plate is a replacement Geddy off of the bay and the tuners are Fender replacements for a MIM Fender 70s RI Jazz.

It sounds amazing. Blows the wheels off of my Mighty Mite parts bass with Custom Shop 60s pups. That bass (the Inca Silver Jazz in the background) still sounds good, just nowhere near as aggressive sounding as this one. I don't know if it's the bridge pickup position difference, or the pups themselves, or combination of the two - but it's noticable.

So for roughly $350 I cured my GAS and I enjoyed the heck out of the process as well. My kids get a kick out of the fact that Daddy "makes his basses". I love it that my 6 year old daughter knows the difference between a guitar and a bass (and she LOVES Tom Sawyer!).

I know it's not perfect, but neither am I, so we work well together ;) . I'm really happy with it. Anyway, just though I'd share.

I thought about that, but I don't think I'll go high mass on this one. The action and intonation are SO perfect right now and the sustain is great, I can't see it making enough of a difference to justify price and hassle.

I'm seriously considering going back to a stock bridge on my other parts bass for the same reason (action).

As you probably know, you need a synth to play from those Fatars - they do not produce sound on their own. For that, you need one of these...

Before I bought my Taurus, I used to play a set of Roland PK-5 pedals MIDI'd to a Roland JP-8000. Didn't sound as good as my real Taurus, but it was a far lighter & more portable bass pedal setup - cheaper, too.

hows the weight of the sx body? i've always been curious about those. I'd stick w/ that bridge too. badass aint all that. actually it's limited (as others & I have discussed on a badass thread).

I recently put a brass bridge & duncan basslines scpb2 on my turser 401 (tele pbass immo) that made an improvement but you win.

Thanks guys. The fatars are triggering a roland sh-32. Nothing sounds like my old taurus 1s, but with the programability of the roland, I can get damn close. Plus I can program a tom sawyer sweep that sounds just like the album. I love that unit. And I don't have to deal with the temprimental analog circuitry when playing live. Program it, store it, dial it up and its there every time.

Those taurus 3s are nice, but my whole set up was like $350.

It was a little heavier than the MM, but so was the allpart neck. So it turned out really well balanced, just a little heavier over all. Haven't put it on the scale yet though.

Geddy GAS solved?

Well, I heard that back in the day when they were getting big, Geddy said "Hey! This is great! We can have anything we want in the room before a gig!". So they got a bunch of booze and stuff (in particular, Southern Comfort) and found it tasted awful. So they ended up having broccoli and stuff in it.

Broccoli normally does create gas, so I'd image that the Geddy Gas issue would be solved by Geddy not eating broccoli.


Oh...Gas? You mean GAS...Oh, whoops, my bad.

Beautiful bass :)
