You fail. By mentioning Geddy Lee and "lip synching" in the same sentence you've deeply insulted me.
Geddy sings, plays bass, and plays keyboards using foot pedals - ALL AT THE SAME TIME (Or he'll switch to playing keys with his hands and bass using bass pedals with his feet). Often in odd time signatures to boot.

The R30 video is pretty good for some Geddy closeups as well. His right hand technique is pretty unique and very aggressive. You've got to have strong hands to play like that for hours on end.

Deeply insulted You? OK. I was throwing something out there for comment. It was a bit of what the hell is going on? and I was scratching my head. The lip syncing I was refering to was playing bass and keyboards at the same time, not singing.. You had to look past the actual words.
I totally hate it when the guitard is going for the 24th fret (on a 20 fret guitar, I added that incase anybody didnt undertsand the 24 fret remark) and the song has the E cord being played. Then they flash to the singer and he's right on cue.
I didn't see bass peddles and am totally amazed at the ability of the guy to sing, dance, hand towels to the ladies, play the bass, keyboards and bass peddles while standing up, all at the same time without breaking a sweat. He has to be cheating as no human can do this. Where was the harmonica? (That was a complement to his abilty for those who dont understand)

I was also watching videos on another forum of my really close buddies at the same time I was commenting here, (I am Omni Dexterous if not Omnipotent) and one of them sent me a Led Zepp video of Stairway. That song while the #1 requested of all time is not necessarily my favorite LZ tune.
HOWEVER, I watched the video intently this is within minutes of the RUSH video watching shots of Plant's unit stretching his pants with shirt open and Page's guitar work. Unfortunately I was not turned on by Plant, but was by Page.
This was a live video from when then song was new. JPJ was on the keyboards, obviously also playing the peddles for the bass lines...
Page was playing his Gibson.. And I was commenting to my buddy how no other band could duplicate that song without dual guitarists playing both 12 and 6 string at the same time. He swapped back and forth throughout that whole song. I was even more amazed...
So that was my day yesterday... Now I am going to go kill myself. BOB OUT
Rush has been using sequenced backing tracks for years. This is nothing unusual for live bands these days and I see nothing wrong with augmenting the live sound of the band with some tracks to fill the sound out a bit. This is why you will often see Neil wearing headphones as he plays. It allows him to keep in time with the sequenced tracks better (much harder to do than it sounds)
To Rush's credit, most of these are triggered by the band members themselves from bass pedals, drum pads, footswitches and keyboards during the song. Really, when you think about it, is it really that different from using any other effect? All just another tool in the arsenal of one of the worlds greatest live bands!
ummm... knowing of mr colbert what i do, i would go out on a limb and say that whole "accident" was fully scripted.
not nearly as funny as he was on daily show, IMO, but that has little to do with the amps behind geddy.

I recall in the early 90s Electrotec was doing Rush's tour using two 56-channel Gamble EX boards linked together. You might think that just one would be plenty for a three-piece band.

What a great board !
I was scr--ed the first time I worked on one of those , with the reversed gain. That's what happens when you don't read the numbers.
The numbers (and the knob pointer) wrap around underneath the pots, so they're more visible to the engineer operating the board.
At one trade show when I worked at Crest, I saw a few guys in suits in our booth staring in amazement at an EX56 and whispering among themselves. After a few minutes I walked over and introduced myself and asked if they had any questions about it. It turned out they were from a company that sells knobs (there were well over a thousand on each EX56), which explains why they were drooling.
Totally agree, and what he did was right in line with his comments during the interview regarding the length of the songs. I thought the whole thing was great, I just wish they did something other than Tom Sawyer! Ugghh. On the other hand, I'm very pleased it was actually live, as evidenced by a few very obvious goose eggs Geddy laid during the guitar solo. I love hearing those, as opposed to an uber-polished show!
