Geddy Lee? The name sounds familiar, so I'm pretty sure I've heard it somewhere before.
Geddy Lee is the best Geddy Lee. And that's all that really matters.
I saw Rush for the first time in 1975, yes as in last century
and I'd be lying if I said he wasn't a big influence.
I think he would be the first to admit he wasn't "the best", but he's part of a band of extremely talented musicians that have survived the biz more than 40 years. You've got to respect that.

I don't think there's any one "best" player, but the YouTube video of Vic breaking a string during a solo is priceless - he's got this "***?!" look on his face for a split-second, and then just keeps being Vic and tears it up.
Spot on. What a waste of time I.M.H.O. What are we talking about here, some sport? Do we have stats to bicker about?
I always love it when people have to comment on how useless a thread topic is when the thread title makes clear what that topic is. Folks, there are hundreds of active threads here at this site, and if you think threads like this are such a waste of time, go spend your time reading and posting in those.
But I am certainly impressed at your self-report of non-13-year-old girlness.
Hey Lee, I understand your point. That said, 'the best' of anything as a musician sorta triggers me... Maybe about the competition thang I escaped with music. However, still think this type of thread is pointless and divisive. My opinion.

it's all subjective to the individual. entwistle and squire I like quite a bit, dave hope of Kansas, jon camp of renaissance, ray Shulman of gentle giant is a monster player, it's all in who grabs your attention and speaks to ya. some folks like bill wyman or dusty hill because they hold it down and keep the groove and that's cool too I love the stuff wyman did on undercover of the night and dusty hill with zz top's waiting for the bus is a fine example of following the guitar part but also letting it swing and keeps it tight. hell there are those who speak of sid vicious in hushed reverant tones. pretty much whoever floats your boat and get's you playing should be good enough
If you want "best" you really need to define what "best" means. I'm pretty sure Carol Kaye has played on a lot more albums than ol' Ged has and a lot of people have never even heard of her...
Trying to name the best bass player is a bout as futile as trying to say which bass is best. It's all one person's opinion which means diddly to someone else. It's great really that we all like different things.
I'm a Geddy Lee fan, until he starts singing. And it's not that his voice is bad; it's just not for me. But it's dismissive to say that he's the best bass player, especially when you consider just how large of a pond you're fishing in. That was a metaphor.
I'm sure Geddy Lee isn't the best bass player. But he is my favorite bass player.
Actually, I am the best; but I am so incredibly humble that I choose to remain concealed in the shadows of obscurity.
