Hi, I have a MIM Geddy Lee bass, and I wanted to replace the black inlays for something else. I know I’d have to sand the neck down to get the epoxy/or lacquer finish off, here’s the thing does anyone know if these are painted on or are they true inlays embedded in the neck. I have the neck for sale now but if it doesn’t sell I’ll do it myself . Any ideas would help thanks!
They're inlays. Even my Squier has inlays, no paint. Thin, like 3/32"; are you changing the binding too? What cha gonna do about the polyester finish? Ebay has Fender licensed Geddy necks (Maple w/perloid inlays) for about $300. Type of finish is not stated. NEW - Neck For Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass, Tinted Finish, #JMF-B | eBay
Seems like a lot of work that can easily go wrong for a small change, never mind it would hurt resale value. Consider another neck (or bass) if that means that much to you.
I'd tend to avoid this with such a heavily finished neck. If it's like my US I would be concerned with needing to redo the binding and finish afterwards. Would seem if that weren't redone it wouldn't be a geddy neck anymore. I haven't picked up a mim in a while so I don't recall how they're finished, maybe I'm off base.
Well the finish I can sand down, that’s easy work. The inlays now that I know that they are actual ones can be heated and pulled off. The binding is done in the same way. It’s just glued onto the neck. Some heat and it comes off.
I had one of those necks, and it’s advertised as a GL neck but it’s actually closer to a Precision neck. It’s not a slim profile neck.
Well, only the fret board would be sanded down and it makes no difference to me in terms of playability if I have it finished again. I know People say there is a difference but maybe my hearing is shot lol.
Not a fan of stickers lol, plus on a finished neck they would stand out and possibly come off while playing live.
They stick like white on rice. They are very thin, you wouldn't even notice them. But if you don't like them, you don't like them (FTR I don't like the IDEA of them.)
Are black blocks and binding that unbearable? If you like the feel of the neck that much, just play that thang!
