Geddy Lee Sansamp Pedal!

Okay - I'll try to keep it brief, but the YYZ pedal is just fantastic! I've spent a lot of time with it this weekend and had a chance to use it at a band rehearsal and a gig at stage volume and it's just amazing! I should also say that my primary instrument of late is a PJ instrument and I found that my initial settings of the clean/drive balance with the Blend knob was a little thick at first, but a quick twist towards more Drive side balanced things out quite easily. I was able to get a great OD tone with some really nice bite with the Tight engaged - to my ears, it seems to add some upper midrange harmonics that give some extra aggressiveness.

I haven't had my Jazz bass out in a very, very long time because I've been digging the deep, fat tones that the PJ has been giving me that the jazz just doesn't quite have (at least not until now). I knew this pedal would surely make a jazz bass shine. So this afternoon I pulled out my American Standard Jazz 5-string w/Ulyate pickups. I was expecting good things with the jazz bass, but holy cow! My jaw dropped when I heard it through the YYZ!

Here's a couple recordings on my rather unremarkable recording setup - it's all direct, I wish I had a proper mic on my amp.

It sounds a thousand times better through a live rig, but these will have to serve as a watered-down, generic idea.

This one is a little driven:

This one is straight, raw, unaffected jazz bass until the 18-second mark and then I kick in the YYZ on a clean setting just to give a feel for an A/B tone sculpting difference. There are many, many tones in the YYZ, this is just one example of many.

Wowserz,

thank you all for the great soundfiles! Now I can‘t wait to get this pre-order here in Berlin!

So I’ve got a DP-3X I love and use as always on at a lower gain - are there any clips or thoughts of the YYZ being used as a drive in front of that? Soooo close to pulling the trigger

I've gotten great results stacking other dirt pedals into the DP-3X, avoiding ones with obvious mid scoop. I've never tried the YYZ first-hand, but from what I've heard in demos it doesn't seem to have radical scoopage, and also has a mid control. So, I think it should play very well with the DP-3X.

I've recently made a couple other significant gear purchases so I won't be an early adopter of the YYZ, but it's the highest item on my wish list so at some point this year I will try stacking YYZ --> DP3X myself.

Sounds great! A clip or two with more drive would be greatly appreciated.

I'll see what I can do, but my recording setup (or maybe my recording skills) have never been able to capture high gain stuff very well without getting "fizzy" and a little garbled sounding. I would probably be doing a disservice to this pedal to try to go beyond the point of what I've already posted. I would need to mic my cab, I think, to do anything better. If I can get something passable, I'll post it.

If you haven't already, I would suggest searching this thread for the awesome media clips that @Gefilter1001 has already posted. He seems to be able to capture the heavier distortion tones of the YYZ much better than my setup can - and the playing is killer to boot!

I've heard other clips.... however, I don't see micing as necessary, as it would be good to hear the pedal straight in to see how well Tech 21 smoothed the harsher harmonic overtones.

If anyone wants to mod a sansamp para driver v2 so that the 100% sansamp side starts flat in the middle, instead of scooped, contact me. Im loving the geddy like grit it can get with the rumble filter engaged, but I have to use all the mid eq to get rid of the scoop, then there is nothing left to shape with.

Is it the same mod for a Behringer BDI 21 ?
( ho man while writing the name of it , only now I understand where it comes from..! )

There are SO many tones in this YYZ pedal. Don't let my 2 little recording examples give anyone some preconceived notion of how it sounds though, or the complete range of it's tonal options. On both clips I believe I had the mids dialed back a fair bit, but that's one of the things I love about the voicing of this pedal - YOU control how much (or not) mid-scooping you want. It's not "baked-in" so to speak. Zero, zilch, nada. Mids can be cut, set flat, boosted - whatever you want them to be to obtain the tone you're after.

All the controls on the Drive side of the pedal are very effective and cover a wide range of their respective frequencies. In other words, small adjustments go a long way and you can clearly hear the changes being made. Makes it super easy to dial in the tone you're looking for.

Its made everything I've plugged into it sound great, but holy cow, I think jazz bass players in particular will be the ones grinning the most with this preamp! Go figure, right? :D

Blending in some Deep really gives single coils some weight to the notes and can give a Jazz bass some real muscle. This pedal makes me want to start using my jazz as my #1 again. A jazz bass and the YYZ preamp just kills in the tone dept, wow!

Great. I really thought I was good for a while. This pedal was on my radar since it’s initial announcement. But I’ve just been happy with my dirt. Now I’ve got GAS hard for this one again. It helps I’ve got a CIJ geddy jazz too that I’ve had for about 3 months. Love that bass. I think this pedal will pair really nicely with it.

Good things come to those who wait. I'll just be over twiddling my thumbs and living vicariously through the demo videos and recordings . . . and all my Rush albums . . . until Prymaxe gets them in stock and sends me another 20% off coupon, lol. #BudgetBassing. #BrokeAsAJoke.

Cool thing is even if you aren't playing a jazz bass, you sill get that Geddy sound. I think even my active Roscoe 5 will have the Geddy sound if I used this pedal.

I think your CIJ Geddy Jazz and the YYZ will pair something along the lines of fish & water. :D:bassist:

I was about to buy a DP-3x until I saw this pedal. Now I really wanna compare them.
Have a DP-3X, but not the YYZ. Geddy uses lots of mids... dUg uses a huge mid scoop, and that defines the sound of the DP-3X (though some midrange can be dialed back in by boosting the mid control). I suspect that the YYZ will be less colored sounding overall.

I feel like my geddy will be amazing with the XXZ too considering it’s got DiMarzio Model J’s in it. Tons of high mid push. They are very high output. Which I like. A lot. Hits dirt pedals marvelously.

Dude that sounds KILLER! Just curious, have you tried the settings in the manual? My personal settings are the YYZ Jazz Bass and Rickenbacker, would love to hear someone else try them. Great job brother.
