Geddy Lee Sansamp Pedal!

Have a DP-3X, but not the YYZ. Geddy uses lots of mids... dUg uses a huge mid scoop, and that defines the sound of the DP-3X (though some midrange can be dialed back in by boosting the mid control). I suspect that the YYZ will be less colored sounding overall.
You're probably not too far off. I recall Dug saying that he tries to go below but also above the heavy Gtrs. Personally, I think that parallel processing distortion like this is the most effective way to get it heard the way you intended as a bassist. I'm excited to try both for sure...or listen to someone's comparison! ;)

Dude that sounds KILLER! Just curious, have you tried the settings in the manual? My personal settings are the YYZ Jazz Bass and Rickenbacker, would love to hear someone else try them. Great job brother.

That's high praise indeed from a man of your talent & tone - thank you!

To be honest, I was so excited to jump right in that I have not tried any of the settings in the manual. I need to get around to that - there's a lot more tones in this pedal than one might think at first glance. I think I'll dig into that manual tonight & give them a spin. :bassist:

Did anyone else notice that Andrew hinted at maybe different versions eventually? It seemed like possibly a programable one was hinted at.

They’re probably basing any future projects on how well the YYZ does and judging by the first impressions from this thread alone, I think it’s going to do pretty well.

I've found that works best for me too - make a bass sandwich. If I play a plain old P Bass in a heavy mix there's to much competition around the midrange with the guitars and vocals. That big scoop just glues everything together to make a big wall of sound.

How well that works depends largely on whether or not the guitarist EQs their tone to fit into the particular midrange hole where the bass is scooped (e.g. King's X). However, if the guitar sound has huge lows, thickness in the midrange, and harmonics going into the stratosphere, then there's likely to be sonic mess instead of a pair of interlocking tones the make the group sound larger than the sum of the parts. In other words, complementary EQing is necessary, not just a scoop on one instrument.

You always hear about bassists tailoring their sound to work around other instruments. Most guitarist just show up and use "Their" sound. Thats a bunch of bs but, thats what happens. My buddy has the most awsome, thick, rock guitar tone Ive ever heard but, you cant hear his bassist at all because of it. It just dominates the mix.

Cool thing is even if you aren't playing a jazz bass, you sill get that Geddy sound. I think even my active Roscoe 5 will have the Geddy sound if I used this pedal.
I have a feeling you could probably plug a can of beans into this thing and it would sound like Geddy Lee.

Good things come to those who wait. I'll just be over twiddling my thumbs and living vicariously through the demo videos and recordings . . . and all my Rush albums . . . until Prymaxe gets them in stock and sends me another 20% off coupon, lol. #BudgetBassing. #BrokeAsAJoke.

I got a 25% off email from Prymaxe a couple weeks back, so I put in the preorder. Waiting patiently, but hoping they get them in stock sooner than the 6/19 date on Musician's Friend.

Keyboard players mucking about in bass guitar frequencies are the problem I usually run into.

(*Disclaimer: I didn't take this photo, it showed up from one of the pages I follow on Facebook. lol)

Yeah, I thought about trying that. But I have a touch of the letters as they say, i’m a little OCD. When I pre-order things I sit and check my email every 10 minutes waiting for updates. It’s bad enough when I actually buy something and have to wait for it to ship and watch the tracking info not change all day.

Bit of a digression, perhaps...

In my mind, I'm thinking that people who would be interested in the YYZ pedal would tend to be seeking the kind of overdriven sounds which go from "just a little hair" to moderately grungy, but not so much full on distortion. When I think of Geddy's tones through the years, that is sort of how I imagine it... some aggressive drive when you dig in, but not anything like fuzztone. As such I see this pedal as potentially covering that magical zone where clean goes into nasty... but retaining mid-focus and without the harsh edges.

Just wondering how others view this?

I think you've nailed it. And that's perfect for me: I'm not looking for super-dirty fuzz/crunchtones from the YYZ. If I want those I can stack it with another dirt pedal (or two!) to get there.

Today I happened to catch the demo below of the 2112 rack unit (YouTube can read my thoughts pretty well) and didn't hear any outrageously fuzzy tones. My impression is that the dUg pedal will get nastier than the YYZ, but of course I haven't heard the latter first-hand.

^^^ I like how it sounds with P-bass, too. I know: 2112, not YYZ, but I'm sure the pedal will rock a P-bass.
