Geddy Lee Sansamp Pedal!

I appreciate the vids that've been posted thus far, however find it strange that a company with the status of Tech-21 still hasn't got a proper demo of the pedal up online (that I can find) yet.

Suppose it makes the most sense to have that sort of review/demo hit the Internet when most stores have the pedal in stock, as a lot of impulse buys typically ensue. So ... hopefully soon, and Bassic Gear Review ideally.

Agree with your point that Tech 21 might be waiting to post YYZ demos until their dealers are fully stocked. That said: I fully expect them to link to the absolutely killer demos done by their endorsers, such as @Gefilter1001 and @MDBass... which of course we've already seen here!

Dang. YYZ is impressing me!

I'd really like to know more about what is going on internally. Any resources with more info on that?

Essentially it's a Sansamp RPM rackmount preamp with the mid frequency set to Geddy's usual setting, then the clean side of the clean blend has a fixed EQ curve applied to make it more of a 'deep' channel. Then there's an additional low-cut switch going into the dirt section to tighten up the response with higher output basses.

That's pretty interesting. It does sound like there's some mild compression. Or at the very least some peak limiting. Maybe that's just inherent to the pedal or to the bass with the hotter output pickups? Or technique? Or maybe it's the beard dampening the sonic vibrations. My hero in more ways than one. Sounds soooooo good and soooooo Geddy.

The beard....lol

Interesting to hear more about the guts: that low-cut on the drive side, the “Tight” button, combined with the Deep side is what gives the pedal it’s magic.

Tech 21 really isn’t super social media heavy by nature, but they have already reposted a few of those videos on their Instagram.

Is also suspect that the presale of that pedal is going wonderfully and doesn’t necessarily “need” that extra pre-release hype ;)

That IG video from @MDBass sounds soooo good.

Side note: MD, I was already following you on IG but didn't realize it until I went to watch that clip.

I was seriously about the pull the trigger on a brand new DG vintage microtubes as I think (thought?) that pedal was the closest I'd found to that overdrive I heard in my head. However, I think the YYZ is much closer. This pedal could not be coming at a better time. I just wish it was readily available already.

Getting along famously :bassist:

 many thanks for sharing! Great video with a lot of the information I was looking for.

As requested @jacoby75 & @tonymcbony: a @tech21nyc YYZ & DP-3X comparison test

I set them so that their overall EQ response is very similar, but as you can hear they still sound dramatically different: I recorded them in parallel, so you're hearing the exact same performance in each, and didn't add any post processing at all.

Useful comparison, thanks! Think I prefer the DP-3X in that particular example, but my preferences could change depending on a number of factors, other instruments in the mix, etc.... DP-3X seems to have more obvious character and "beef", while the YYZ sounds like a more aggressive version of the original tone. Could also be a slight level difference in favor of the dUg pedal. Will try to check out the YYZ whenever it gets to Victoria....

Edit: listening with my K702s, I think I prefer the YYZ

The DP is definitely much more colored than the YYZ, and there's no real way around it even with dramatic EQ'ing: both tracks are peaking at the same level though, one isn't louder than the other.

The style of distortion in each pedal is so dramatically different that I'm definitely glad to have both.

The YYZ is more versatile with it's style of clipping, it has more dynamics and crunch, but the clank and metallic sheering tone of the DP is sometimes exactly what the mix calls for.
