Geddy Lee Sansamp Pedal!

Haven't tried the YYZ yet... however, I get the impression that it is not as strongly voiced as something like the DP-3X, meaning that it will be likely be more capable of a variety of tones which are not full-on GeddyDrive.

Agreed. Ya never really know 'til you try 1st hand, but that's what I've heard in the demos.

There are a few tone demos of the YYZ with myself and Tim Starace on my Instagram stories

The “Tight” control makes the unit incredibly versatile as it completely changes the voicing of the distortion: tight, cutting distortion with it in, fat OD into borderline fuzz with it out.
Thanks for sharing! Sounds awesome, definitely buying that pedal.

I used the GED-2112 and I'm getting the YYZ for the smaller form factor. The Geddy drive is definitely a plus but the GED-2112 is also versatile with a good range in tones. It can cover most musical contexts. It nails the Chris Squire grit. The grind is easily achieved and nice to have for all my basses. Judging from Matt and Tim's demos the YYZ will do the same

Out for Delivery. :bassist::bassist:

Note to self: Clear out any preconceived notions for weekend plans and put this thing through its paces. :)

I'm sorry, I know I'm luckin' out big time on this pedal. The wait since January has been particularly brutal for everyone, myself included.

But the fact that there's batches and individual pedals starting to land here & there is a good sign! It ain't here yet, but I'm about ready to drive around town and intercept the mailman if he doesn't show up soon. :D

Not much time to get too much into it, although I will say - the YYZ rocks! :bassist:

It does the edge of OD perfectly and even further into distortion range. I've owned the Para, RBI, RPM, BDDI and VT Bass, but this is hands down the best OD/Distortion tone of any Tech21 product to date, IME.

Snazzy packaging too - came in a very sharp looking black & gold metal tin along with some Tech21 swag and warranty/manual in the box.

Sorry for the lack of time to do a more in depth review, but I need to spend some more time with it, use it in a live music context tomorrow and will definitely share more thoughts over the next few days.

Here are some more pics:

I'm also liking the more vertical layout rather than the horizontal aspect of other SansAmp floor pedals - easier placement on my pedalboard.

I had the ged2112 preamp as well as every other sansamp product. Personally, I prefered the grittier od rhat I could get out of the paradriver v2 with the rumble filter engaged. Im thinking that the bite function on the new pedal will do something similar. Can't wait to hear some reviews!

From the designer ,this new fonction is mainly for those who don't play as hard as Geddy Lee. They used To complain from the "farting sound" when they played softly on the 2112

Maybe a middle boost to make the attack stronger !

It's in production, should be soon now. This is typical for Tech 21: a product announced at winter NAMM doesn't actually hit the street until late spring/early summer.

And that’s a pretty darn good timeline compared to some other products I was interested in at NAMM. I was given answers from companies (who also no idea about street price) ranging from 4th quarter 2019 to “I don’t know.” Some of the bigger companies who have farmed out work overseas had new products to market within a couple months.

Kudos to Tech 21 for showing us that they’re in production!

Okay - I'll try to keep it brief, but the YYZ pedal is just fantastic! I've spent a lot of time with it this weekend and had a chance to use it at a band rehearsal and a gig at stage volume and it's just amazing! I should also say that my primary instrument of late is a PJ instrument and I found that my initial settings of the Deep/Drive balance with the Mix (blend) knob was a little thick at first, but a quick twist towards more Drive side balanced things out quite easily. I was able to get a great OD tone with some really nice bite with the Tight engaged - which to my ears, seems to add some upper midrange harmonics that give some extra aggressiveness.

I haven't had my Jazz bass out in a very, very long time because I've been digging the deep, fat tones that the PJ has been giving me that the jazz just doesn't quite have (at least not until now). I knew this pedal would surely make a jazz bass shine. So this afternoon I pulled out my American Standard Jazz 5-string w/Ulyate pickups. I was expecting good things with the jazz bass, but holy cow! My jaw dropped when I heard it through the YYZ!

Here's a couple recordings on my rather unremarkable recording setup - it's all direct, I wish I had a proper mic on my amp.

It sounds a thousand times better through a live rig, but these will have to serve as a watered-down, generic idea.

This one is a little driven:

This one is straight, raw, unaffected jazz bass until the 18-second mark and then I kick in the YYZ on a clean setting just to give a feel for an A/B tone sculpting difference. There are many, many tones in the YYZ, this is just one example of many.

There are SO many tones in this YYZ pedal. Don't let my 2 little recording examples give anyone some preconceived notion of how it sounds though, or the complete range of it's tonal options. On both clips I believe I had the mids dialed back a fair bit, but that's one of the things I love about the voicing of this pedal - YOU control how much (or not) mid-scooping you want. It's not "baked-in" so to speak. Zero, zilch, nada. Mids can be cut, set flat, boosted - whatever you want them to be to obtain the tone you're after.

All the controls on the Drive side of the pedal are very effective and cover a wide range of their respective frequencies. In other words, small adjustments go a long way and you can clearly hear the changes being made. Makes it super easy to dial in the tone you're looking for.

Its made everything I've plugged into it sound great, but holy cow, I think jazz bass players in particular will be the ones grinning the most with this preamp! Go figure, right? :D

Blending in some Deep really gives single coils some weight to the notes and can give a Jazz bass some real muscle. This pedal makes me want to start using my jazz as my #1 again. A jazz bass and the YYZ preamp just kills in the tone dept, wow!
