Valsmere, thank you so much! I just booked me spot for personalized Geddy Lee autographed book in Chicago next Wednesday. I had my book in my Amazon.com cart when I saw your post!
I understand both sides I just put it into the fun category as some thing to get out of the office for a day. And seriously I know that I have spent a $100 on dumber stuff in my life. Plus I liked his work in the past. Win win for me.
I'll be there in Philly, and looking forward to it. Thanks OP for the heads up. Woulda been upset if I missed getting a chance to meet (if only briefly) a bass hero from my youth. Saw/met Victor Wooten perform (w/ Bela Fleck) in the very same store 18yrs ago. Should be cool.

I never got his book. I had to wait month after month and they kept pushing the dates back. I felt like I was being screwed over when other people had it in their hands. And I pre-ordered it. Sadly, I only have the Kindle version. After all the money I poured into that band, it's a shame that I feel as though I got shafted.
I think the publisher severely underestimated demand for this book, and got caught flat-footed when the first printing ran out. Another indicator that they don't really understand the whole Rush band/fans dynamic, is that on later print runs, they put a sticker on the book with a one-word pull quote from none other than Rolling Stone.
I actually wound up with a copy of the book that was noted in the colophon as being from the third printing. That copy made it very clear they were pushing them out the door as fast as they could, because the QC on it was pretty much non-existent. Scuffs and scrapes on the pages, lots of ink bleed from page to page, and in some cases, pages stuck together so badly, they tore apart the layers of paper when I opened them. The book had obviously been bound together before the pages had even dried properly.
The happy ending is that when I called HarperCollins in NY, and told them what I'd received, the very nice woman in customer service sent me out a replacement copy that day. I had taken a slew of pictures, and was ready to send them all along so they could see that I wasn't trying to scam a free book, but she said it wasn't necessary. In fact, she didn't even sound surprised when I detailed the issues, which makes me think mine probably wasn't the only call they'd had like that.
By the end of the week, I had a properly pristine GLBBBoB in my hands, and the beater was on the way to the recycler, so all's well that ends well. But I think this process has given HarperCollins a few notes to take about Rush & related matters.

I don't have the book (been wanting it, was waiting for the demand to slow down). I dig Rush but I am not a mega fan...
I look at it this way, $112 bucks (with taxes/fees/whatever else they can tack on...) gets me the book hassle free, the signature is a bonus but meh... it's not like "Dude! I ran into Geddy Lee and he signed my book for me (which coincidentally I was carrying around), though that may be how I end up telling it...
I've seen Rush a few times though it's been years and it looks like I most likely won't have a chance in the future. I think it will be fun. Maybe I can give him a T-shirt.

Does anyone know exactly how much detail there is on the Rickenbackers he used? I mean, like, when did he install the Grover tuners and did that 1977 4001 that he first used on Hemispheres.. did he have Rickenbacker install that Badass I bridge or did he do that right away upon receiving it? Re-frets? How many?? Stuff like that.
I skimmed the book quickly at first, and then went back to re-read it in detail, so I've only just gotten to the Rickenbacker chapter at the moment. The answer to your question is kind of a "maybe." In addition to the chapter at the end going over the particular basses he used on various Rush albums & tours, he has little details and asides sprinkled all throughout the pages of the book, in photo captions, etc. So the particular detail you're looking for might be in there - if he remembered to put it in, and if it made the cut from his initial 800+ page submission the editors asked him to winnow down.
With that said, I can tell you this book is one of the rare instances of a publication living up to - and exceeding - its hype. If you like basses even a little bit, (and considering where we are right now, um... duh?) you will be glad you got this book. It's absolutely worth the money, autographed or not.

While I was trying to make some plans for July 20th last night, my wife insisted I keep my calendar clear. I looked puzzled, so she said, "I have a surprise ... something for us to do in town (Atlanta)." I still resisted somewhat, hoping to finalize my plans … so she simply told me … "we're going to go get a signed copy of Geddy Lee's book and meet him in person. So, I don't want you to make plans on top of that." I said, "Plans? What plans! I'm going to go meet Ged!"
And it isn't even close to my birthday! What a cool wife, eh?
I've been a huge fan since 2112 … and a Geddy Lee WannaBe ever since! I have butchered his bass parts as a failed musician-turned-hobbyist for decades. More recently I have also been butchering his keyboard parts as well ... just in my house as I wouldn't subject others to such torture. Been to something like 13-14 Rush tours, but never met any of them. Back in 2008 or so I saw NEP on his motorcycle while I was riding mine (going opposite directions). That's it.
So, now at least, or perhaps at most, I get to fist bump my #1 favorite bassist!

This works out great for me. I was already planning on being in Atlanta for the Iron Maiden concert that night, so now I get to see Geddy Lee and Iron Maiden in the same day.
Nice. I got a cologne this year for my birthday and a trip to Cancun. First gifts in 18 years! On the other I'm very picky about stuff I buy for myself therefore the arrangement and usual lack of gifts. I love my wife nonetheless.
I hope that didn't come off "like my wife is better than anyone else's!" LOL
I'm like you … I buy lots of toys for myself all year … am picky … and clothes no longer fit me based on size … so I do understand buying for me is tough … but she definitely got it in one for this gift!
Yeah I am as well, wife usually just tells me to pick something as far as gifts go. When she saw me reading about this book tour she said go, you need a break. when I said I have his book already she just said So? This one will be signed.
She is a keeper even after 17 years.
