Geddy Lee

Here is a video of Rush performing "La Villa" that I hadn't seen before.

Every time I see a Rush video made before 1981, I come away with the same feeling - I don't think the Geddy Lee of today looks or sounds very much like the Geddy of that earlier time period, or even like an older version of that guy. It's still a skinny guy with a big nose playing bass and keyboards and singing with a shrill-ish voice, but it almost seems like a different skinny big-nosed guy. I'm not sure it even looks like an older version of the same body to me.

I remember reading (or hearing, maybe) years and years ago that at a certain point Geddy received a medical opinion that his singing style was heavily damaging his body and that he had to make a drastic change quickly or else lose his voice completely...or something like that. I can't remember, much less vouch for, the source. Do you guys remember anything like that?

In any case, there seem to be some really weird differences between the young and the contemporary Geddy that cannot be accounted for by age alone. Call me crazy.

Rush has always been ahead of their time. Just look at the 2nd youtube video clip that was posted in this thread - Neil Peart was pioneering the mullet in 1975!

Question for the original poster: Are you trying to suggest that "the original Geddy" fell victim to some horrible, career ending malady and was somehow secretly replaced?

Well, he is around his 50's now. Singers usually loose some of their ability to sing up high when they approach that age. He has also had his rig go through a lot of changes since then.

Any differences between now and then are more gradual that you are saying.

all that matters is that Geddy is the foxiest dude around. :hyper:

y'know, i was watching 'tom sawyer' from E...SL yesterday and could have sworn that he played the middle (during guitar solo) part with his index finger only.
yeh, i'm slow.

His looks:
i really like the "new" geddy looks.
much more than the "hold your fire" geddy or the "signals" geddy (wich really really scares me).
His Music:
i noticed that a lot of people hates the "new" rush. i really like em. I like "Counterparts", i like "roll the bones" also and i think that Vapor Trails haves really great moments.
like the new bass sound, and the way he sings also.
His Bass:
I love the new tone on Geddy`s bass also, specially in Rio. And the new way he plays too (i like the Out of the cradle/gohst rider/leave that thing alone/etc,etc basslines)
His Voice:
I noticed that 2112 is played 1 step down to let geddy sing it (listen different stages). I read somewhere that he was told that he can`t scream that way anymore.

anyway, im not objetive, since i must be one of the biggest fans rush ever had.... =S

Well, obviously, Geddy's vocal range has decreased as he has gotten older. Around the 1980 time he semeed to be going through some kind of vocal changes, which resulted in a mushc stronger, deeper voice circa Grace Under Pressure and onwards. I much prefer his "mature" voice though! I think if you listen to every album his voice matures just a tiny bit-imagine even Geddy of the Signals era trying to sing Bastille Day as it appeared on record!

If you read the interview on Bassinside about Geddy you'll see how he admits it gets tougher to reach those high notes as you get older, and he recounts how in his younger days he could just hit the stage and sing, whereas now he has to take his time to warm up first.

Age catch's up with everyone eventually, You can't outrun that clock, Look at Robert Plant Paul Mcartney, They don't have the vocal range of anything like they used to. It's just a fact of life everyone age's and it effect's everyone differently.
I still love Rush! Gawd Bless the three piece!!

Yeah I think so too actually Age has done him well, He's got a great look now. Vocally though nobody 50 years old can sing like they did when they were 30,,, Ask Mick Jagger, Or even Aretha Franklin's band has to tune to e flat now to accomodate her lost range, She still smoke's, I seen her this summer and she was fantastic..
