Geddy Lee

Geddy is a baseball addict, can talk your head off about baseball, especially the Expos. He and Alex both have developed an addiction for Golf also. Geddy and Alex have been friends since Middle school. Alex used to borrow Geddy's guitar when they wre young because Alex's family couln't afford one for him. Geddy and Alex played their first gig together when they were 15 at a coffeehouse for $10. Practical jokes hae been a mainstay of their friendship and continue on to this day, even pouring over to Neil, who isn't always the best at being th recipient. Geddy is generally quiet and reserved in private, preferring to keep mostly to himself and his family. It is said that Geddy was a relatively shy person in his youth.

Just some tidbits I have picked up over the years....hope it helps

i think the coolest thing about Geddy is how many bassists he has inspired and influenced. I picked up bass when I was 13 because I was so inthralled by his use of the instrument. To this day he is probably the only idol of mine that I think I would fall to my knees in the "I'm not worthy!" pose and trip on ever word from my mouth if I ever met him face to face.

Just a note on the spelling which has been kinda bugging me...

I just called my Dad, who has worked with Al and Geddy on many occasions, and he seems to also think the spelling on Al's paychecks were in fact Allan Weintrub

I would believe this from Al ...because he would not have liked the pronounciation Waint-Rub....Dad believes that Al possibly changed the spelling , as with Peart.....should be pronounced .Part (like Heart)....but Neil apparently liked the mispronounciation that the DJ's did, and went with it.

As I am led to believe....my Dad will be able to find out the definitive answer on the last name spelling, as he did sign many cheques to Al, and was best friends with Bob Schultz...

Checking the records for proof of a totally useless thing....:D

Hey thanks a lot guys. There is a lot of great stuff in this thread and most of it is dead on.

I did find a magazine today at Barnes and Noble (love that store). Its a special edition of Bass Player "25 Bass Giants." Geddy happens to grace the cover and has a 1 page article that should prove useful.

FOR THE RECORD - Geddy Lee is the Man that made me want to be a Musician....If/When I meet him I will only have 6 words to say to him...his own words:

ONE IS GRACIOUS AND SAYS THANK YOU....then I'll hand him $10

...and he'll say:

"Hey...10 bucks is 10 bucks right?"....then we'll go to Tim Hortons for Coffee (wishfull thinking)

I got my MOJO from pool hoping in Geddy's Yard! hehehe :bassist: where did you get yours?

Another milestone tidbit...

In the Canada's walk of fame, I believe Geddy says he got $7 for his first gig, for which they went to the local delicateson and ordered Fries with Gravy, and it made him feel like a superstar...

Get this....Since buying our house (green circle), we always had the biggest xmas eve party, as my Dad is such a major player in Toronto, that is where I got all the childhood info on Geddy, that he may or may not want you to know..I will be kind....

So anyways...this apparent "first gig" Geddy went running to our neighbour's (had a garage jamming band) because they had rented a PA and there was no power cable....he leant them his, and also joined in on the fries and gravy.....wow what I wouldn't do to have a napkin from that event

So Close....and yet So FAR.......one day it's Timmies for me and Geddy!!!!

Geddy was my main inspiration to take up bass.

I like how he hasn't decided to mellow out either, as most musicians seem to do as they get older. His playing these days is more brazen and more aggressive than anything he's done in previous decades.

I remember thinking it was a female singer the first time I heard them from their Retrospective CD when I got a lend of it. I was taken back by the insane bass playing and was even more "0_o" when told it was a male singer/bassist...

Geddy for the win :)

I don't listen to Rush anymore, not a big fan of prog rock, but like Geddy's style a lot. He has even influenced Tim Commerford and I LOVE RATM so I'm greatful for what Rush has done. Awesome drums & bass. Dream Theatre makes me puke, but Rush has some great grooves.
