Geddy Lee

A lot of early Rush was recorded when Geddy was a kid. I mean, he couldnt have been more than 25 when Anthem was recorded!


I think it's the Zen thing that comes with age... he's really got nothing to prove. He was a young guy that could play circles around all of the other young guys and he showed it - He's now an older guy that can play circles around all of the other young guys, he doesnt need to flaunt it all of the time.

Imagine straining your voice singing high and screaming night after night for years on end, that's gotta take a toll on your pipes. Not to mention post show activities: women have a way of making you age at an accellerated pace. He still rips the bass a new one time and time again. I really liked Stick It Out. Great, newer, rush song. But Limelight and Spirit of the Radio will always be my favs.

The only singer immune to this, to my knowledge, is Jon Anderson. I swear that bloke's voice gets better with age.

But yeh, in addition to everything else on here, Rush is the greatest 3-piece ever.

Hello gentlemen,
I am writing a paper on Geddy Lee for my english class. It is a profile piece. Basically I need to write about how cool Geddy Lee is while still kinda sticking to a main theme.

I have done some research on him, but I need some more basic stuff. A lot of the stuff I have found is more specific tour based interviews. Do you guys have any good Geddy resources that might include more about his early life, some anecdotal stories, or magazines that have interviewed him recently?

From what I know...

I hated his voice growing up, I couldn't stand Rush. Then, after I became a bass player, a friend took me to a Laserium show in SF - 20 years of Rush. And I was hooked! I think understanding the music and skill level that it takes to play their music, made me appreciate it much more.

My favorite album is Rush's Exit... Stage Left from 1981.

I used to work with Geddy's brother Al Weintrub (Bob Schultz TV Production - T.O.), that's what I think the spelling was.

But it was pronounced "Wine-Rib"

Odd thing I remember about Al (GL's Bro) ...everytime he turned his head he closed his eyes, and would re-open them at the end of the turn....really nice guy, however did NOT like to talk about his brother Gary (GL). In fact I did NOT know who his bro was till about a year after working with him....he used to tease me that his bro was a bassist in one of Canadas top bands....but that's all I could get out of him....and believe me I PRY'D!!!

Not 100% sure on the spelling though.

Geddys family sold 3 years befor we bought, so we never met, but all the older neighbours told me all the stories of him as a little boy.

In the Canada's walk of fame commercial, there is a pic of Geddy in his driveway with an acoustic guitar....My childhood bedroom window is in that pic

How cool is that?

Cool...now I know for sure....I guess Al has succeeded in the TV biz...we were just PA's at the time...Production Assistants....think I'll try to get in contact with him....he still owes me $5 for a bet....that I'll never figure out who his brother is....hahahahaha

To me, what makes Geddy so very cool to me, is for Moving Pictures, they got a Juno....and I watched the shows and saw every speech thanking all these people I didn't know or give a crap about, some went on for ever...

how cool is that???

Mike Bullard while interviewing him, mentioned that Geddy can be seen many mornings walking his dogs along Queen Street Toronto.....he also said Geddy has the most recognizable voice in Rock and Roll.....man, I would have lost it if I was Geddy....that's just how cool he is...

How cool is that?

Yes Big Schnoz!!!! he had very similar hair and wore it way past the shoulder...had a very distinct "strut" when he walked, I always compared his walk to Kim Mitchell

My brother made a joke one day asking if I thought Al could sing like Geddy....I said why do you ask...he said, well you think they'd have the same Ball Structure....man, I've been laughing at that one for almost 30 years!!!

I'm 39, and was 14 when I worked with Al...he was older...around 19, I think....he is younger than Geddy.
