:eek: Holy balls!

Today (well, the 20th) was my birthday, and my wonderful sister surprised me with tickets to the show!

Wow. I couldn't be happier. They played YYZ, which is one of my favorite songs, as well as classics such as Spirit of the Radio and Working Man. (I can't recall what the last track of Permanant Waves is called, I think it's Science of Life, or something like that. But they played it, and I love that song. :D) What a great show! Peart's drum solo was incredible, and soon I'll get to read his book. (My brother in law bought a copy at the show.) Geddy was amazing. He played Jazz basses the whole time, including an all red one that I thought was his Wal at first. But no, it was an all red J with a maple fretboard.

I was also very amused by the background movies that were playing, a bunch of which were pretty humorous. It's good to see a band that doesn't take itself TOO seriously. I wish I could have understood what Alex was saying during the little story that he told, but my seats weren't condusive to hearing spoken word all that well. All I heard were "pork chops" and "krispy kreme". Everyone near the middle was laughing, so I'll assume it was pretty funny.

While we're talking about humor, they also played "Roll the Bones". :D

About SuperDuck's mention of the video, I agree it was hilarious. Sound was great in TO, so I heard every word of alex's story, and it was great. Too funny :p

The red J appeared to me to have no pickguard, and have a flamed top, can anyone clarify this?

I saw the no pickguard but didn't see a flamed top - it could have been I wasn't looking for one, though.

I'm pretty sure I saw two different black jazz basses - both with a white pickguard and block inlays but they looked different under the lights. And there was the black jazz with the tortoiseshell pickguard.

And - the thing that annoyed me the most - the bass tech tuning Geddy's bass while smoking a cigarette. It's a small thing but it yanked my chain a little.

I saw all three basses from the front row in Charlotte.. no flame top on the red one. I think he only had one black one with a white pickguard but I could be wrong. I dug the black/tortoiseshell one, too.. he played that on "Driven", which was one of the highlights of the show for me.
Geddy was none too pleased with his crew during the Charlotte show, especially the guy running the mix for his in-ear monitor. But, on the third show of your first tour in five years, I guess you'll have that. Can't wait to see them again in Atlanta! 86 days and counting...

The red one was sans pickguard, but was not flamed.

He played two black jazzes at my show, his classic, and one other one, which was identical except for a black pickguard. He only used this one for one song, presumably while the other one was being tuned. :)

my brother in law caught one of the shirts that alex tossed! it was only on the way out to the car that we realized the back said "this shirt is from dryer #3 of the rush vapor trails tour" at that point i told him to NEVER wear it again and that it really needs to be displayed in my near my bass amp. btw, the show was unforgetable.

Chicago, Saturday night.

In fact, there were tons of problems with Chicago's show. The keyboard triggers in between verse and chorus in Roll The Bones were way to quiet and off-time.

I've seen them 11 times, and this was not their best show, though their setlist was awesome!

ive seen them over 10 times myself and i thought it was as strong or stronger than ever on friday.

About the special shirts, that's really cool.

The Basses I saw were the white on black Jazz ( most of the show [I don't think 2, but maybe he had to pull a backup out for tuning purposes when you saw it SuperDuck]) the tort on black jazz, for driven :D, and the no pg/red one. I know he said he needed multiple ones for drop D tuning, or something so I figure that was the red one? or maybe the tort one, I dunno.

His monitoring seemed fine, he looked pleased the whole show and no signals to the sound guy. This was after at least a third of the tour though.

I would like to see them where the sound is good. If you listen to interviews about the latest live disc, "Different Stages", you'll hear Geddy complain about how the sound at that venue is boomy on stage. He said he was surprised, repeatedly, that the sound was as good as it was through the board. It's characteristic of this venue.

Anyway, he uses 3 basses because he's got 3 different tunings:

>1 is regular E-A-D-G. This is the black w/ white pg.
>2 is D-A-D-G.
>3 is D-G-C-F, where he tunes down all 4 strings for songs like 2112.

Thanks a lot for the info. The sound was good, but a bit boomy. I mean, everything was defined enough (alex's guitar was just short of ear pearcing) but geddy got buried occasionally, but not much. You could always hear him in the subs, but he needed just a bit more mid level through the PA I think

About the tunings, do you know which was which this tour? I know the white on black is standard, but , what was the tort and the red one?

Edit: figured it out, driven was on the tort, so it's the DADG, leaving the red one to be down a step, because that seemed right, though I can't remember what he played w/it.
