Geddy's bass tone

Just out of curiousity, does anybody know if Geddy used his old 4001 or a newer 4003 on the Snakes & Arrows 2007 tour?

I went APE S*** when I saw him come out with it...I figured I'd never get to see him perform with one! Boy was I wrong :cool::bassist:

It sure looked like his old 4001 (a '74, I think?). I'm not sure he even owns a 4003. I went looney myself, especially since I was at the second show of the tour. I saved my odd-jobs money for almost a year before I bought a used 4001 in 1984 or so, just so I could be just like Ged, and then the next time I see him, he'd switched to a Steinberger. So it was exciting for me, too, to see him lug out the old warhorse.

Just the back of the neck. My luthier did sand over the binding as well since it would have left a "ridge" otherwise. But it looks exactly the same. He didn't sand the back of the headstock, just where I would play. Also, he didn't do the heel where it bolts on... again, just where my hand would be. The neck is finicky enough, no need to change the heel pocket fit! Finished with oil. Looks great and feels even better.

That picture quite clearly shows an early 70s 4001 bass with Grover tuners and a bad ass bridge ...

He had another 70s 4001 with tuners that looked like schaller m4. And he played a white 70s 4001 with black trim on some videos. It is rumored that white Ric belongs to Alex. Geddy also had a 3001, a 4002 and at least 2 doublenecked 4080 basses. And he has a 4003 bass. (I think all of that is true I might have missed a Ric or 2)

Interesting. I have not heard this but it makes sense. The only time I have had to deal with broken headstocks is when a guitar player wiped out during the show. You know, coming down a ramp with the big rock star pose....

Heard this from a few repairmen and I think in a book somewhere. The "teardrop" plug at the top of the headstock supposedly is not just for decoration, but helps regain strength in the nut area of the neck that was removed to install the truss rod. Don't know if this is true but I have never seen a broken Fender bass headstock; but I've seen plenty Guild and Gibsons with busted headstocks.

The shape of the headstock, the shape of the horns, the old grover tuners, the shape of the pickguard ... plus I have seen enough Geddy pictures with his Rics to where I can recognize them very quickly ... and I have owned 20 to 30 Rics at various times and I have worked on quite a few Rics in the last 10 years ... Also if you could see the bass closer the old pickups are slightly different than the new pickups, the old truss rods are different, the old necks had a skunk stripe that even on a jetglo bass shows witness lines.

Plus I recognize the dings on the headstock of that bass and I know it is an early 70s 4001 bass.

it is all in the details ...

and Geddy does or did have a 4003 bass ... this info comes from someone at Rickenbacker ...

For all you that have been commenting about the Ric in the photo, I talked to him today about it at rehearsals and says he bought it new in in 75 or 76. He said his first original is his white one.
Ged doesn't own any of the double necks any more.
I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think he has any more of his Ric's other than the black one and his original white one.
I don't know if this helps or not.

It clears up a lot of speculation about the doublenecks. I really wonder if he got rid of the 4002 and the new 4003 he had? I guess we can still speculate! :D

Hi All,

This is a bit off topic for bass stuff but Alex's tech is looking for a original Loft 440 Stereo/ Flange/ Delay rackmount unit. These things are hard to find. If you guys know where we might find one it would be greatly appreciated!!!!!
