Geddy's YYZ track isolated. Yum!

Sweet- I had been over-complicating a couple of spots; I think studying this will get me more confident in playing it live.

YYZ always seemed to be one of those "audition pieces" for bands in college. It was inevitable... either the guitarist or drummer would (half) jokingly suggest it or start playing it. I would just go with it and see if they could actually play it! Got a few gigs that way. Never actually played a cover it of it live though, probably for the best.

Wise words, i´ve flirted with the idea of playing in front of people too, but it intimidates me more as years pass by, regardless of the improvement of my so-called "chops"...

The edited fills on the "isolated track" are not cool BTW.

Am I the only one that thinks that this is just some bedroom bassist playing over the original recording and posting it as an 'isolated track'?

First off: how, exactly, can you just isolate the bass guitar from a cd? EQ only goes so far, and that isolated track would still have kick drum and guitar overtones coming through.

Secondly: If (and that's a big if) these champs DID have the original masters and could really solo the bass track, don't you think it would be someone close to the band who posts it? Wouldn't you need authorization?

Not trying to bag on the clip, because I appreciate karaoke as much as the next guy, but if it's not really Geddy playing, that should be pointed out.

But HOW? Does Rock Band or Guitar Hero get the actual master tracks and put them on the game so you can isolate them? The bands give up the masters to be on the games?

If the answer is Yes, then okay and I'll shut up. It's just that some of the isolated tracks sound so bad that it's a wonder Cliff Burton is hailed as a god. (not picking on Cliff, but...well...)

If it's not Geddy (and I really think it is), someone has finally mastered his tone and playing style. Which would need to be celebrated in its own right.

But I'm pretty sure those are the actual tracks.

Yup, the bands do give their masters to the Rockband and Guitar Hero people. If the bands do not they get bands to cover the tunes. Theres a list on the rockband site detailing which ones are covers or masters.

Im with you Mo, there are hundreds of clips like this out there for different rock bands. There are some wrong notes as well which im surprised people dont pick up on.

These are from Rockband which uses the original tracks. Could it be a fake? Yes. But sounds to me like its the real deal. The tone and playing are too close IMHO.

Ahhhh the beauty of mixing an album. C'mon...you guys didn't think RUSH went in the studio and NEVER punched in or flubbed did you??

Listen to most isolated tracks of any band and you will hear all kinds of goofs and slop.

I have an isolated tracks that would make your hair curl.

I've listened to this song thousands of times and have always heard the overdubs you mention.

Y'all must not be Rush fans....this is no doubt the real deal...it's dead on.

Yep, there are a lot of recordings with overdubs. Especially solo sections, where they often want a different tone than when the whole band is playing. Not to mention punch-ins to correct mistakes.
