The guitar Paul was playing is indeed a L6 Midnight Special - (strings through the body, toggle sw 1 vol 1 tone, bolt on neck & no varitone) as his onstage "trashing guitar". ....the L6-S (which later became the L6-S Custom) had a glue in neck with a tailpiece and 6-postion Varitone switch. Paul used the simpler L6 Midnight Special variant & he broke hundreds of them. Specially setup for breakage. And yep, a few years later he was breaking Marauders.

To me no Gene Simmons or Kiss thread is complete without this live video from The Midnight Special 1975:

I also believe no stage is complete without 6 Marshall heads and cabs and 3 SVT heads and 4 SVT cabs.

Great show.... before gene couldn't stand to even look at ace across the stage, and before chris's voice was COMPLETELY destroyed (although it's getting close there LoL).

And Gene sounds awesome on bass. and you gotta love the great 3 part vocal harmonies those guys did live.... just outstanding always.

Aaaand... the spinal tap ending!

I think he’s a born entertainer. What’s not to love? You’ll get some comment from some tool that he can’t play like Jaco or something equally dumb. He’s a total star. If you could be a mega star packing arenas for 4 decades or be a tiny bit better at some bass technique what you choose? I’d take the stardom. He is awesome. So that is how I voted.
Not to mention he was a born businessman, promoter, and entrepreneur...
coulda sold ice to Eskimos, as they say...

Yeah, he really pushed it in a few places, he had a great voice too. He destroyed it?

WEll yea, it was always really rough, but awesome too. But singing like that for years just made it so he couldn't really control it as well later on, and his pitch started to go. He had work done on his throat and started singing much cleaner, but couldn't put the air through it any more and started singing flat all the time. Sad... such a talented guy.
And I think he was a great rock drummer. None of them was a virtuoso, but they were a very evenly matched set of players in the original KISS lineup.

Gene Simmons has got what no one on this board, popular as it is, does. Say what you will about his bass playing, musicianship, sense of style, and popular persona.

There was a guy decked out in Gene's full costume at my gig on Friday, it's not the first time I've seen him in attendance. He's well known for being at shows around here.
