Genre defying artists

In instrumentation, perhaps, but stylistically not really.
The band used to incorporate a lot of elements of Indian classical music and often featured woodwinds as well as strings years before I joined. The current 7-piece is what the bandleader jokingly calls his “stripped-down, rock n’ roll version” of the band.
True to this thread, I have a hard time categorizing it. The band is called Church of Betty if you want to look us up. I’ve been onboard for a little over two years of its 30+ year history. We’re in the middle of recording our first record in over 10 years.
I’ll look it up.
To me, Los Lobos is one of the best American bands because they can switch between all the genres of Americana and be authentic and own it. One of the best live bands too!
I just did, and wow, that’s quite a musical mosaic. I’ve seen similar ensembles, even did sound for one once(Jai Uttal), but that’s pretty sprawling. It reminded me of this thing that Mohini Dey was involved in early on…
There is a small but somewhat related current outfit that I came by due to being interested in their bass player, Shahzad Ismaily…
The guitarist is the son of minimalist Terry Riley, Gyan. Shahzad works extensively with guitarist Marc Ribot. I’m always down for cross-pollination.

And while we're playing the genre name game: I was talking with my stepson, who is also a bassist (and was 20 at the time, so our life experience is half a century apart) about "Metal" sub-genres - metal being a term coined AFTER I started playing bass. I believe it actually arose from the lyric "heavy metal thunder" from "Born To Be Wild" by Steppenwolf, which would arguably make them the first Metal band, but I digress. ANYWAY - I was asking him what the distinctions were between the sub-genres and he was very helpful, as, for him, these variations were obvious, being as they've always existed in his lifetime. After a bit I said something like "At least there's no such thing as 'Folk Metal'" to which he replied - "Yeah, that's actually a thing, too."!

I’d say that Donovan’s “Hurdy Gurdy Man” with possibly(depending on who you ask)Jimmy Page on the fuzz guitar is the first folk metal song. But YMMV.
The term “heavy metal” was around before Mars Bonfire(AKA Dennis Edmonton, brother of Steppenwolf drummer Jerry Edmonton, but not a member himself)wrote the tune, coined by beat writer William Burroughs. Some scholarly types cite the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me” as the musical birth, but me personally, I would go back to the Paleolithic “Rumble”, by Link Wray. Stravinsky’s “Rite Of Spring” might be a contender.
