Genres on a violin bass

Hi all. I’ve fallen for the Hofner ignition BB bass in transparent black! That neck is amazing! It’s like it was made to measure for my hand.
I’ve played jazz/ p basses since 2010 at least. Always liked the jazz then got my first p bass a couple of years back in preference of the thicker neck. I’ve currently only got a mark hoppus signature. I’ve always dismissed the violin basses as lame, mainly due to me playing punk/pop punk. And more so lately shoegazey style with a The Smile vibe as of late. Digital drum beats with a hip hop feel over 80’s esq guitar sounds. I’ve also got into various bass pedals for the first time. Now my question ( not a question cos I will buy one) is will the BB ignition fit in the mix? Or will it be a recording bass only. Or is it a one trick pony. I NEED ONE!! tia.

You have to look up famous players and only play the genre they play. That’s how it works. Same reason you can’t play rock on a Jazz bass. Same reason your guitarist can’t play rhythm on a Les Paul. Same reason you can only play bluegrass with a banjo. Same reason you can’t really put bulgogi in a taco. Follow the rules or you’ll end up in jail.

I beg to differ, sir. You can only play rhythm on a Les Paul. The switch plate says rhythm and treble not rhythm and lead. :D

To the OP: play the bass that makes you happy. It will work out.

get one, it's fun. will it fit your music and how would you use it -- it depends on you.

mine is used as a lightweight bass to carry and gig, but for recordings I somehow prefer my long scale solid bodies. YMMV

If what you want to do is fit in "the mix"? It will do that quite well - depending on the mix. Sitting in the mix is what they were intended to do - that's what almost all bass players did, way back when these basses were a viable mainstream option. If you want to be an up front, bass shredder player? Uh... probably not the best option for you. They like to spit that floating bridge out, if you play hard enough... Pocket playing in the mix, is what I do with all my floating bridge/trapeze tailpiece basses - and I have several of them. As for being a "one trick pony"? Sad to say, but... IME, yeah, they kinda are. You can change the tone pretty drastically with different strings, but sitting in the mix is what they were intended for originally. And, pretty much all they're really good for, now. I like all of mine - a lot. But, I know what they can do well - and what they can't do so well. Just one of the reasons why I have a couple dozen basses...:cool:

Thanks for the “advice” but I think you are wrong tbh. Certain things are made to go together like peanut butter and jelly. No one is saying you can’t substitute jelly for mayo and be wrong. But I am saying would my choice work. I’m not saying that if I buy a Hofner violin that I have to get a bowl haircut and only play Beatles songs. I am asking as someone who hasn’t owned or played a great deal of the violin if it’s an all rounder or not. But once again thanks for the negativity rather than the advice nice work.

And I’m saying the body shape of the bass doesn’t affect what music you can make with it.
Hadn’t considered the haircut.

Good lord.... I'm exhausted from just watching that video. Was expecting Richard Simmons to pop out for a jazzersize promo. I was around during those days, but forgot how much stamina it took to play in those 80's bands lol. That being said, I am a huge fan of Tina, and she seemed to be pretty loyal to Hofner and just kills on it/them.
