Genz Benz GBE 1200 - Power issue?

Bingo. I'm a perpetual gear swapper and my 1200 has been with me for 4 years now - I've owned it longer than anything else that I have (and it's not going anywhere). I've brought a lot of other amps home during that 4 years, but the 1200 contiunes to rule them all. Killer piece.


+1. My GBE1200 is amazing. Absolutely touring quality.. it is a tank!

Also..... I bought mine used and the footpedal went wonky... one call to GB... Chris sent out a replacement. Total time of call was under 10 min. Try THAT with Ampeg (I love Ampeg and have called them... not 10 min with full resolution!).

Also, I just added a TC Electronic RH450 to my arsenal for smaller gigs and rehearsal..... big gigs? No way the 42lb GBE1200 is staying home. I just sold my Ampeg SVT... but the GBE isn't going anywhere.

Plus it looks cool.:smug:

Just out of curiosity, how tubey can you get this amp going in comparison to (let`s say) an SVT CL?

Much more articulate IMO. It can get tubey, but if you are looking for a Fender P into a SVT-CL sound.. ain't gonna happen. Punchy? Absolutely.

The tone shaping on the GBE is also a cool thing. Much more tonal possibilities than a SVT-CL. An Ampeg SVT-CL is almost a one trick pony IMO. One great tone, but not the most versitile amp in the world.

That`s pretty much all I needed to know. I gigged a CL once and it was pretty nice but I found its articulation to be pretty absent - and at (I believe) 80lbs, it wasn`t something I was wanting to experience again.

Now how would you say it compares to an Aguilar DB750/1? My understanding is that the Aggie takes everything you love from a CL but expands on it, makes it better, and gets rid of the things that weren`t working well for it - that said, it also seems to be known for being a bit of a one trick pony, although the trick is a pretty good one! But yeah, comparisons in the tube department between it and the 1200?
 
I ran my GBE1200 for about a year with zero issues. It had a real ability to control the woofers in a cab. Even at the same volumes, it just had more "sack" than my GBE600. You could feel it. It just throttled those drivers into submission and made them behave.

The only reason I sold it was too get something smaller (ShuttleMAX 6.0). The V8-powered GBE1200 Thunder-Boomer was way more than I needed for my gigs. You'll love the EQ.
 
The test conditions did not meet the industry standards for the power test. The rumors are untrue.

Let me just say that we do still support the ideal of testing amplifiers on an unregulated power supply, because very few of us gig with a regulated power supply, and the primary goal of our testing is to be as representative as possible of the kind of performance which a given player may encounter out in the field. That being said, power supply variations are very important when measuring the output of these big amps, and I do think that it is important to note the wall voltage being supplied at the time of a test, as well as the extent of any voltage sag which may have occurred during the test. We are now doing this with greater precision than what we did in issue #1. But again, I prefer to test with unregulated power, for the reasons stated above. We may at some time also test using regulated power sources, but I plan on keeping the unregulated tests. Our tests are not aimed at reproducing what an amp can do in a sterile, controlled laboratory environment. We are trying to indicate how amps will perform "on the job."

All that being said, I do think that the specific rumor stated by the OP is wrong. There's nothing bad that we can see about the GBE 1200's power supply, and it seems to behave in a predictable fashion with regard to voltage sag.

Let me also say that we have in fact rather substantially revised our amplifier bench test methods (the new methods are described by our Technical Editor, Tom Lees, in [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]). The new methods are a significant enough deviation from what we used in previous issues that we will retest all amplifiers which were tested in issues #1, 2, and 3, including the GBE 1200. We are also doing away with the 5-string power tests, as these tests produced potentially misleading results with heads (like the GBE 1200) that incorporate a high-pass filter.

I was the "use and listening" reviewer of the GBE 1200 in issue #1, so I had the opportunity to play it on several gigs, in several venues. Believe me when I tell you, that head has NO issues with power!

Let me put an end to this rumor right now.

There is absolutely nothing true or accurate about this comment. I believe it was due to something he or a friend read in a review in BGM magazine where they tried to measure the power on a 1200 with a poor (unregulated) AC power source, and were not able to do so accurately. The larger the amp, the greater the deviation from rated power due to the Vsquared factor in the power equation. Unfortunately we were the first large amp tested with the improper procedure and their tech didn't recognize the importance of input power voltage in the measurement of power and it's (squared) effect on the results

When I analyzed the test set-up, they did not follow the industry standard practice of using a regulated or fixed input voltage and for large power amps of all brands and models, this MUST be done because the output power on all conventional amps falls with a dropping power source voltage. Other major issues were also uncovered when analyzing the test procedure, Tom and his crew have been revising and revisiting their approach to testing and we hope to discuss this more at NAMM to try to come up with some tests that relate better between lab and real world performance conditions across all brands and especially with the advent of the newer class D products, amp types.

The 1200 delivers at least 1200 watts RMS into 2 ohms and 1000 watts RMS into 4 ohms with an input power of 120 volts (maybe slightly more at 240 volts). It will also function without going into protect mode down to <105 volts.

Regarding amps and low voltage protection issues, any (quality) amp should protect itself against extreme low voltage conditions. Less than 105 volts (excluding Japan) is the commonly accepted low line condition threshold, and what most manufacturers are doin gis improving their protection schemes to improve product reliability which allows (many of) them to increase the duration of their warranty. Look back 10 years and you will see generally higher industry failure rates and shorter warranty periods. With the industry trying to improve reliability, the newer amps will generally do a better job of protecting themselves from things like low line conditions, resulting in the amp shutting down and protecting itself rather than failing. Which would you, as an owner, prefer? Especially ifthe warranty was shorter and you were responsible for the repair.

If you encounter a line voltage falling below 105 volts, you really should be cautious about plugging anything of value into it. Don't forget that line voltage must be measured under load, and excessive foltage drop is not uncommon with sub-standard wiring and extremely long or undersized extension cords.

This looks like a power amplifier failure. Did you buy it as a used working amp or was it sold untested as is? It might be best for you to discuss this ASAP with the seller if you can. If you bought it new, there is a 3 year warranty on the amp.

It is also possible that it suffered a major tumble during shipping. Was it shipped in the original factory packaging and double-box?

Where are you located? I can get you a list of service centers that may be able to help you with this.
 
Hey guys,

I`m looking into possibly getting one of these amps and when I mentioned it to a fellow bass friend he said to be careful with those because they are known to have power transformers that act funny under unregulated voltage situations.

I`m just curious if this is true or not, what that even means, etc... I know I`ll probably be playing in a few dodgy places since half of everything in Knoxville looks like it was built before the 50`s so I wouldn`t expect their electricity to be the best... That said, I`ve honestly never even heard this problem mentioned on here before in regards to this amp so I don`t know.

Kind of an old thread!

Never use a large, high current power amp an a Furman voltage regulating power conditioner. With a high source resistance on the power source (long extension cord, undersized wiring, etc) the regulator can hunt and become unstable, damaging the regulator, the power amp or both.

Plug this amp directly into the power source without ANY regulators or conditioners. The amp has everything it needs onboard.
