Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 Appreciation Thread

I got hooked on the LF boost, tried it after all of the "extended lows" talk and I like it allot. I always left it on with my 6.0 but when I first got the 9.0 I though a slight eq of bass was enough. I've been playing with it switched at modest volumes through KRK studio monitors and just had my first loud jam engaged with my Avatar rig. The only problem is my clean head room had been reduced a bit. During a loud jam with my drummer I experienced a bit more soft clipping than I'd like (just a bit more). I don't always need this volume with PA gig support but I love getting out of a stressful exam rolling over to my drummers house and seeing if we can peel the paint off the walls.:bassist:

I think upgrading my avatar 112 210 stack with an Uber or Berg might give me the paint peeling volume I want while saving headroom. Maybe if Genz Benz would put an Uber in a Colorado showroom it'd help my decision making (Hint Hint).:ninja:

I forwarded one of your last posts on Rob's music to our rep. There is only so much we can do though. We can't "put" one there I'm afraid if he won't buy one.

Loving my 9.0 too , she is a keeper fer sure !

+1 to the Shuttle/Berg AE match-up... very good to me... full, but still bright and grindy!

Cool Munj... glad that worked out!

You may be interested to know I played the 9.0 through an Eden D-212XLT at practice tonight. Maybe I just wasn't putting enough power through it before, but it sounded halfway decent with the Genz. I ran it close to flat, with no buttons pushed. I still don't think the D-212XLT sounds similar to the AE212, though.

This little amp is gaining favor by the minute with me. I'm going to gig it a few times, and it may turn out that my DB750 and Heart-Rock have some long shelf time ahead. If I have time tomorrow, I will drop a Telefunken ECC83 into it to see if there's a discernable difference in the sound . Frankly, I don't see how there could be a lot of improvement.

It's quite an amazing little head, isn't it? I have been surprised, over and over, at the 'girth' this thing has. I haven't used it in other than large bar settings, and outdoors, but even with a pair of G112s...it has more than enough-way more-ooomph to keep the guitar players in check. I actually didn't think it possible, but the 'tubey' factor in this thing blows me away...I now know that I need (want) to buy a Streamliner to add to my GB collection...as I slowly become a one manufacturer player again. In my humble opinion, Andy, Roger, Scott and Jeff...simply "get it"...to watch the threads here on TB...and then see the requested products appear...is very heartwarming...they listen...to the working bass player.

I've followed this thread since it started, and have also been tracking the 6.0 appreciation thread, which started more recently.

I haven't joined in either one, because I'm torn. I have both, I gig both, I love both. They are so different, and so perfect in their respective domains. It's like choosing between daughters (okay, they're Andy's offspring, strictly speaking, but, etc., etc.).

Bottom line... Thread peruser: if you are on the fence about picking up either one, and you play as I play, go for it!

But, I am a little nervous about inviting a bad boy, the Streamliner, into the family. Oh well, let's see what mama puts under the tree in a couple of weeks!

You know what the worst part of birthing an amp is... it's not the straining and it's not the pain, it's Roger!

Seriously, they all have their personalities and I like each of them in their own special way. ;)

I've generally been running my tube gain at about 3 o'clock, but I've been experimenting the past few days with pulling the gain back to about 11-noon and making up the volume with my VT Bass pedal set somewhere around "B-15ish." Gives me a nice hump in the lows and the low mids and frees up the mid control on the Shuttle so I can dial a little more snarl in the upper mids.

OK, just a heads up ... I put the Telefunken in the 9.0 tonight, but it was too late to play it through the speakers. I did listen to it through headphnes, and it sounded fantastic ... but it sounded fantastic before. So I'll plug it into the cab tomorrow and see if I can tell the difference.

For the Genz Benz guys ... are there any permanent magnets in the amp? The reason I ask is that while re-installing the tube retainer, the lock washer got loose in the amp. I tried to shake it out, and it rattled a couple times, then nothing. Either it fell on the floor where I can't find it, or it's stuck to something in the amp. I was concerned that it might short something out, but the amp hasn't blown up yet, so it may be MIA on the floor or on my desk.

That brings back memories...When I used to do amp repair at a music shop in the '70s we had one brand that sent us amps straight from the factory with hex nuts floating around in the chassis. They apparently had been torqued too much and busted off their screws. How those amps made it through QC is beyond me but the nuts with their accompanying screw ends would lodge against other components shorting them and causing all kinds of bizarre behaviour.

Moral of the story: You might want to make sure that thing's outta there.

Yeah, I know. That means pulling the circuit boards, which have many nuts and washers just like the one that's AWOL.

Bummer! When I changed mine to a Tung Sol reissue, I worried about that washer also. I used a magnetized mini screwdriver to remove & reinstall it. Worked well. I hope you find it. BTW, I can hear zero difference between the stock tube and this one! I think that only the "golden-eared" amongst us or those who want to hear a differrence might notice! I do have some old RCA and Bugle boys around but I don't think it's worth changing in this case.

No magnets in the amp.

I hate it when a part gets loose. Really wantto be sure it's not floating around but I suspect that it's on the floor.
Tap the chassis a bit and see if maybe you can get it to come loose. Pulling boards is not something that I would recommend, there's not a lot of room in there.

A trick to changing tubes is to loosen the screw and slide the retainer back a little so that it rotates out of the way. I think you can take the tube out without completely removing the retainer.

Thanks for your response. I've shaken the crap out of it, and nothing rattles, and I've been playing it this morning with no mishaps. I was too dumb to think about just sliding the retainer back, but I sure will do it next time.

I did put the Telefunken tube in it and I'd like to say it tightens the sound up a little but, to be honest, I can't tell if it made a difference ... I do not have "the golden ear." It sounds excellent either way, but I'll leave the Tele in there for now, just to say it's in there. Bottom line, if there was an improvement, it wasn't enough to justify running out and dropping $100+ on a preamp tube. I just happened to have one lying around.
