Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 Appreciation Thread

The output limit LED just indicates that you are entering the output tube emulation limiter. It's like the GR LEDs on a compressor except that there is 1 LED and the circuit does many things like compression, limiting, harmonic generation, etc.

Go ahead and hit the limiter, nothing wrong with doing so and that gets you into the more power-tubish kind of overdrive sound (and especially feel). The only thing I would caution agains is where the LED is on more than it's off. If that's the case, you need more rig for the gig.

Thanks dude. It's less than that so far and I am on the louder side of what I need. I didn't really expect a lot more volume going from 350 to 500 watts. It seems to be comparable. I do shut the limiter off in the mb500. Just sounds better. As long as I an not damaging anything on the shuttle with occasional limiting I an fine.

You won't hurt a thing. I am one who likes the limiter light on the Genz gear. I've owned a GBE 1200, Neo-pak and Shuttle 6. I like that it flashes when I'm pushing it. YOu really have to push it hard to get it to stay on more than it's off. That's a cool thing, just because it's a visual indicator that you are getting that very cool tube-like response from the head. FWIW, the Neopak was my favorite Genz head of all the 3 I've owned. I liked it because the output was small enough that I got to push it hard more often. It resulted in a very warm yet still punchy sound.

It should be noted that the output tube emulation limiter was designed specifically to avoid squashing and sucking the dynamics out of the signal. Scott and I spent as much time designing this limiting scheme as anything else on the amp. I must have built up 7 or 8 different limiter type designs before it was decided that everybody liked this one the best. Some were very complicated and "accurate" but just didn't have the vibe.

You guys did a great job on the limiter. It sounds so stinking good it's freakin crazy.

Chewy gooey but not squashy.

IIRC I believe if you should reach the limit of the power section a protect mode would engage before the amp is damaged. Is this correct?

If you push the amp hard enough it will clip. It's fully protected against thermal and overcurrent faults. No worries.

if you PM me your name and shipping addy, we can mail you another washer.

Thanks, will do. I'll bet I can get a similar one at Ace Hardware, but I'll take up your offer to get the official titanium alloy Genz Benz lock washer.

As an aside, it seems like Genz Benz is really hitting the mark on its products and customer service. Lots of buzz here at TB. I'll be sure to drop by your booth at NAMM.

Thanks again.

Bbe not bhramaputra. Lol at Droid. Also gain and vol 1 o'clock master 2 o'clock.

the settings seems ok.

If you're using an 8 ohm cab that isn't that sensitive, that sounds like part of the issue. Also keep in mind, that "distortion" compresses things quite a bit.

got your PM. We'll actually send you the limited edition, 25th anniversary, locking washer. Jeff Genzler signs each one.

Please do stop by at NAMM- we're in the KMC Music booth.

Thanks for your kind words and your business.

mmmmmmmmm Dingwall I need to get one of those one say...
bhramaputra .. I never heard of that.., I need to look into one.. I like compression at times... cool stuff!

Everything flat but +4db at 200hz or so.98 Db cab at 8 ohms. Dingwall abz passive. Medium compression from bhramaputra optostomp. Sometimes lots of bass and or distortion from an mxr m 80 set flat with color depressed.

anyone placing your shuttle 9 in a rack?

I did it for a while...I had a rackmount tuner, Shuttle 9, and a Joe Meek ThreeQ and Boss VF-1 in a four space rack. It was nice to have a lighter rack, but ultimately decided to totally embrace the "light weight, totally portable" sentiment and ditched the rack in favor of carrying my Shuttle 9 in the pocket of my gig bag and putting my tuner and effects on a Pedaltrain MINI pedalboard.

I carry mine in a brief/flight case. I love my Shuttle so I would dare not let anything happen to it.

Yes this case is working out really well. I scoot the amp over to the left with the towel folded up on the side, front, and back, and have room left for my two pedals. My whole rig can fit in the case (tiny pedal board and all) with the exception of my Bass and my Cabs. :D

It insures the amp will be protected in transit.

Here is my tiny pedal board, basically a volume cut pedal (for solos) and my tune. I slip the board in the back and put the pedals to the side of the amp.

Yeah, I don't really find it an "issue" at this point, was just a concern. My Mb500 doesn't give me any indication other than auditory when pushed, so it's just a case of dealing with more information.

what other GB product use this limiter circuit ?
are they all calibrate the same ?

All bass products use this circuit or closely related variations to it. There are subtle differences based on the amount of jeadroom we have to work with, the voicing of the amp and the overall feel that we are trying to achieve.
