Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 Appreciation Thread

Cool I'll have to do the same :)

Gigged my 9.0 a few more times now with the 212T and I really couldn't be happier. I record a lot of my gigs and listening back to the ones with the shuttle 9, I can't really explain it too well as I'm not too technical about these things, but the tone just kind of hits my center and gives me a warm feeling inside. Like, when listening back to my old amp the tone sort of formed a circle around me, maybe described as a bit boomy with a lot of high overtones, whereas with the shuttle it goes right thru me and thumps in my chest. Is this maybe what they mean by 'tight and focused'? I hope that makes sense. on one song I was pedalling with a pick on a low D and wow, it was just euphoric. As loud as I need to be it never gets harsh or brittle. In fact this rig seems to sound better and better the more I push it.

Hmm so THIS is what it's like to have great gear :D

That sounds terrific, which 212T did you use? Uber?

I now have a Shuttle 9.0!!!! :D

I posted the text below in the Bergantino AE212 thread, but since there's so much Shuttle content in it I figured I'd post it up here for everyone. I can't believe I waited so long to pick a 9.0 up! After absolutely loving a GBE 1200, Neo-pak and Shuttle 6.0, why the hell did I not do this sooner?

--repost below--

Shuttle 9.0 is here. I've been banging on this combo for an hour or so now. Versus the RH450, the AE212/Shuttle 9.0 has a MUCH better sound all the way around, as if they were designed in tandem. The Shuttle will drive the absolute snot out of the AE212 without the output limit light ever flashing. It's just wonderful sounding. Run flat, it's very aggressive with an ultra tight bottom that I like, with much more top end than the RH450 provided. I've never really used the filters on the Genz heads, but the LF Boost on the 9.0 actually sounds really good with the AE212 since it just lowers that high pass filter without really boosting any bass. It's kind of like an on/off switch for a pillowy bottom. VERY nice. Maybe I'll actually use it some time.

For me though, leaving the filters off and dialing up the lows to about 1 or 1:30 with my 55-02 was just instant gratification. Still a bit aggressive but smoother sounding. To get it even smoother still, taking a touch off around 1k just sounds incredible. This is the tone I've been missing for quite a while. Since the AE212 is so aggressive sounding, scooping a bit out at 1k still has a lot of bite, but it's buried in the other frequencies at this point. The resulting tone is more modern sounding without being anemic. For my goals, I much prefer this approach versus trying to add 1k to a smooth sounding cab which just seems to make it honky or clanky.

I turned down the Tweeter to about 10 o'clock which is just right for me. With the Shuttle treble set at noon, it seems to give me the perfect blend, and boosting just a touch adds some nice sizzle. Since the Shuttle's treble is at 4k, just like the crossover on the AE212, cutting treble has the effect of pulling that sizzle out quickly if you want, and it gets warm and round. I don't think I need a VLE or PTC at all from what I'm hearing.

This almost makes me wonder if Jim Bergantino and Andy at Genz worked together on this and decided not to tell anyone about it. Very nice synergy going on. Can't wait to get this on a gig, but I can already tell it will be wonderful. I'll never need much more than about 75% of the total volume this thing can put out, which is just right given the form factor. I'm a happy camper!

Side Note: I also bet this head would KILL with a Neox 212!

This also sounds terrific, not making my Uber vs. Berg decision easier. I've recently got addicted to the LF filter, it use to be the one filter I didn't use but now I just love it. I've got to the point where I only switch the mid cut on and off, while adjusting my j-retro eq. After 6mo of daily use, I still prefer it flat in most rooms with mid cut switching.

For Shuttle 9.0/ Bergantino AE212 owners, you guys should try these settings and see what you think:

Berg AE212
Tweeter @ noon

Shuttle 9.0
Bass at 1 o'clock
Mids Flat
Treble at 11 o'clock
LF Boost on
Mid Scoop off
HF Attack on

This is just deep and punchy, with a top end grind that doesn't ping at all. It sounds wonderful. I think cutting the highs mostly above 4k and then adding the HF attack from 2-6k (according to the manual) places a nice bump in that 2-4 khz range. It sounds wonderful with a jazz bass.

I had some extra knobs around so I put them on the Shuttle. They don't look as good as the aluminum knobs, but they are so much easier to read. What do y'all think?

I actually like the look better! I always thought the 'chrome on black' didn't quite work visually. Nice!

I kind of like the original, but when those LED's are going it's hard to see that little black dot. And the more you try to get down to eye-level with it, the more blinding the lights become. I like these knobs because I can glance at one from 10 feet away and know where it is set.

I really need to quit tinkering and get back to my day job. :help:

I've often wondered if I put a dab of my sisters or gfs red nail polish if I could turn the blue LEDs into dimmer purple LEDs.

Haven't tried out of laziness and happiness with the illuminating glow the amp puts out in a dark room.
Someone a year or two ago mentioned putting some kind of acrylic polish on the LED's to make them darker.

Interesting, I think my first mod will be adding gel foot pads to the 9.0. Last rehearsal I notice something resonating inside the head when I play Bb on the a-string.

Is this a really bad thing? It seemed to go away when I place my head on top of the GB caring case, I think some shock absorbing feet would do well but am worried if this might mean something is lose.

GB engineers & techs: Any ideas on what I could tighten to loose the rattle?

edit: May help to know its been played hard a few times a week on a two cab stack for 6mo now.
