Genz-Benz Shuttle Megathread

Dennis,
Thats just the regular 112 w/the 6.0 on top, right? Does the 112 neox have a 'foot' too? (mines not here yet)....

Yeah, that's what he's playing. And yes, the Neox112t does have the foot. Here's me with a fusion trio last summer, with the Neox112t kicked back and the NeoPak. The angle of the photo doesn't make the tiltback as obvious in my photo, as compared to Dennis', though:

OK folks, I made a recording of my gig today at the Wachovia Center in Philly using the Shuttle 6.0. The recording is from the house PA (direct from the 6.0 into the board). In the begining of the set, the sound man said that the bass signal was too hot. The settings were (Direct Output in the back- EQ was set to "PRE" and the Level was set to "Line"). I then switched the EQ to "Post" and he gave the the thumbs up. On the front end, everything is set flat. On the signal shape section, the L.F Boost and Mid Scoop buttons are in and the H.F Attack is out. I'm playing a MTD 535 with everything set flat except a touch of bass.

Sorry about the poor quality. I'll have a new myspace page up tomorrow so that I can put clear sounding mp3s up.

Sounds great man. There's something about it that reminds me of my 1200. Huge and gutsy, but totally clear at the same time. Sweet playing too man. You remind me of Billy Stewart. Do you know him? He's another bassist in our area.

OK, the better sounding mp3 is at Link Removed

Ya know, I find the 6.0 still amazingly quick for a tube pre amplifier.

It's still has the tube plush-ness, but quick too.

Where is it said that a tube front end equates to being slow or not quick? It all depends on how a tube is matched to a circuit. I don't think I have heard anything quicker than a Demeter pre. The great thing about a tube done well is that it is quick and warm. Demeter does that so well. After all, some of the world's most expensive hi-fi gear is tube, and "golden ears" don't do tubby. Not all tubes have to sound like Ampeg. But it sounds like the Shuttle is close to a Demeter.... I just had to sell my HBP-1 to downsize. :hmm: I was hoping the Shuttle would be on the Demeterish side. I plan to pick up a 6.0 this week and will report back.

This Shuttle thingy seems to be just what im looking for to replace my MarkBass SA450.
Although i have no problems with the MB, now that i have a "good" P im looking for a more vintage tone for my covers but also something with some sparkle for more modern stuff.
Does having the Tube pre give the sound more depth? Im after a cleanish sound, certainly not over driven but its nice ot have some warm grit when needed.
Sorry for the questions. There is no way i can get to try one out over here in the UK.
What i dont want to happen is to find ill loose volume going fro the MB to the Shuttle (even though i dont push the MB too hard anyway).
Is it a realistic 600watts in to 4 ohms? I plan on using it with my UL212.
Im trying to read the whole thread but there is a lot of it.

Shizz, that sound clip sound great, any more? I can hear from that that you can indeed get a nice warm tone but thats also down to the Bass i expect (and the playing of course)

This is where switching the DI output to mic level is indicated. The line level position is specifically for operating with real pro consoles that are designed to handle input levels that are +4dBu professional line level. Many MI grade consoles cannot handle the real professional level standards, but since our bass amps are designed for full on pro touring applications, the line level option is included for those players who can use this.

Another stellar gig tonight with the Shuttle 3.0-10t ministack. This was in a club we've played before, but it was like a different room tonight. It was packed with a great, enthusiastic crowd. Lots of cheers, dancing, and applause ... a great crowd to play for. This was with the Brian James Band, electric blues, etc. The show was recorded, and I can't wait to hear it. It was by no means perfect, but it had a great feel to it.

The last time I played with them, I had the LF boost engaged. This time, I left it off, but boosted the bass EQ knob on the Shuttle to about 1:30. Pre level was at 1:00, and master was at 11:00, and we could hear it just fine. This drummer is a little louder than the drummer who played with us last time, but I still didn't have to crank things any more than this.

Finally, Nashville was pretty crowded tonight. I couldn't find a parking spot closer than 5 blocks away. With the ministack, I didn't even bother trying to jam in beside the club to unload. I just carried everything from where I parked. Nice having ultralight gear!

I'll post sound clips when I get them, if the recording turned out okay. I didn't get a chance to talk to the engineer after the show, but hopefully it recorded well. He recorded a mix of the room and the board. We'll see.

Cheers

Well, I must admit that the 112 Neox under the 3.08T combo is a rig that will probably fill the bill for at least 50% of the gigs I do. I've heard the comments of that 112 being "the best 115 I've ever heard"...and now I understand what they mean. That cab is a hoss, it takes and puts bottom under the mini-monster rig that is just unbelievable. The 112 and little 8" combo sound as full as the 212 cab I used to play, and is 30 lbs lighter... actually 50 lbs lighter with the head included. The 3.0 head continues to amaze me too. I gotta think the Genz guys are really conservative on their power ratings... For grins I set the 3.0 on top of the 112 neox and another 118 sub I have and holy cow I was almost divorced... I literally vibrated a picture off the wall in the bedroom, luckily it DIDNT break, and I had it back up before my wife got home!!
Now... I cant wait for that brown truck to deliver my 6.0 this week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cool, Terry! That is a very versatile rig you have there. You can slave the 3.0 off the 6.0 or vice versa, and run your 212 and 112 simultaneously. Very nice.

As for the conservative power ratings, I'm not sure if you've read where Andy talks about reactive loads and their measuring criteria. It's in some posts here somewhere, but I don't know if the word conservative is an accurate one since most people seem to associate that with just providing a smaller number than what could be provided. It seems these guys really give specs based on what an amp can deliver into a working cabinet, with all the dips and swings a driver creates while it is moving and reacting to the signal. Real world watts.

FWIW, I think it would be perfect for that. I've had a Neo-pak for a while, and I used a brand new G&L L-2500 through it for the first time this weekend. I did one song using a pick with the neck pickup soloed, and it sounded great. The G&L output is very hot, so I was able to really grind the tube even in active mode. It was VERY fuzzy, with a nice mix of cushion to make it authentic, but not overly loose on the bottom end. It still had a fair amount of punch to provide some distinction between the notes. It was superb.
