GenzBenz Streamliner Pt 8...

I have a cab question... Has anybody tried a Streamliner with a fEARful cabinet? I'm really interested in building one of these, but I'm not sure how a flat full-range cabinet like this will sound with the Streamliner's tone. Currently I boost the heck out of the 600k through my Uber410 and really like the tone. I'd love to hear experiences or opinions on getting a thick mid-punchy tone out of the Streamliner/fEARful combination.

That's Sharknose79's rig he posted somewhere here earlier in this thread

How loud is the headphone out on these? Is it controlled by the master volume?

I'm just wondering because I'm trying to come up with a simple way to monitor myself if I need more me. Playing in a live practice type of situation.

We typically mic everything, but I hear the final mix...not a monitored mix...so the bass is kinda low IMO. Obviously, with this possible option I'm only going to hear me (and the drums), but I'm curious if it'll even work in the first place.

I've played my Streamliner through a couple LDS 15/6's, which are very similar sounding to the fEarful spec. This is another personal taste thing, so take my comments with a grain of salt, realizing a like a bit of growl and grind to my tone.

The simple answer is the Streamliner sounds great with the 15/6 cab... plenty of oomph, amazing fat but controlled low end, and a very nice natural top end. For me, it really didn't work, since it was very difficult with the voicing of the cab and the EQ of the Streamliner to get both a nice low mid bump and some upper mid brightness at the same time (which again is key to my tone). I could dial in a nice low mid presence and punch with the mid control set at the 250 hz or whatever, and dialing the bass back a bit, but then the top end was more 'trebly' than grindy//bright. And, just the opposite with the upper mid settings.

So, very round, fat, creamy and pure, but just not enough punch and character for me personally.

To put my comments again in context, my favorite cab with the Streamliner is the Berg AE410, which is almost the mirror image of the 15/6 cabs.... very tight deep down low, a nice low mid bump, and a very present 'top of the driver' aggressive upper midrange that provides some nice character and growl. And even with that cab, like you with your Genz 410, I still boost the midrange at 600hz and cut the bass and treble a smidge.

You might LOVE it though.

Pretty well any cab with prominent, forward mids should get you what you describe. As long as your cab is providing the midrange you need, the Streamliner can take care of the "thick".

I think the fEarful sounds great, and it has the midrange clarity you're asking about, but it's an usually "wide", hi-fi tone. The fEarful has less baked-in colouration and distortion than most mainstream cabs, and only you can decide whether it would scratch your itch.

Here's video of an Avatar TB153 (counts as a "nEarful") with a Streamliner on the gig:

This is far from a comprehensive list, but for what I think of as a thick yet mid-present tone with the Streamliner, here are some promising choices:
- AudioKinesis Thunderchild
- Baer ML112
- Berg AE210 or 410
- Berg NV
- fEarful
- Flite 103W/110MH or 112MH

The 15's and 12's seem to contradict what was said earlier about multiple 10 cabs being best suited for the SL. Why did you leave out Uber 410? I dig it but of course the quest never ends.

Cone diameter really doesn't mean much. I only mentioned those particular cabs since others have reported success with them and the Streamliner. The 15 is reported to be a pretty low mid punchy cab with plenty of brightness, and I have interest in trying any three way mid driver loaded cab!

I do have some familiarity with the Neox212, and it is somewhat bright, tight and smooth, sp that seems a good potential match also.

I have no experience and have seen very few posts reviews on the other Uber cabs, so can't comment:)

The Neo sounds "flatter" and perhaps "warmer" to me. It sounds really nice doing motown or jazz. The Uber seems to have more harmonic complexity, I haven't really listened too critically but it feels almost like it has more of everything - lows, mids, and highs. It's just a more aggressive-sounding and bigger-sounding cabinet, and seems to respond better to dynamic playing. The Neo is a rounder-sounding cabinet to my ears.

That's my overall impression. If I have time I'll drag both cabs together and do a real listening test this weekend.

+1 I'd love to hear it with that 1288 cab, and even the Uber15. I'm sure it would kill with the Neox212 also.

I can confirm that the Streamliner works well with all of these cabinets - the Neox212 has punchy mid-range which works really well - in the shop I have the 128 and 15 stack which just kills with the STM900 - huge.

I feel that any well balanced/mid forward cabinet works really well, low emphasised cabinets get bloomy and too fat.

I sell Vanderkley cabinets which are almost the perfect match having that tight mid range like the AE410 and amazing high end definition - the Vanderkley 112 or 212 + Streamllner is the most popular combination in my shop!

I can't wait for the New Bergys come in - I think the HD210/410 will be hard to beat!
