I'm really digging the combination of my AudioKinesis Thunderchild cab and Streamliner 900 with a new fretless project bass. It's just a cheapie, a 4-string Squier VM Jazz, loaded with DiMarzio Area J's.
I've never been a Jazz Bass or a big fretless guy, so I don't know if this is normal, but I'm finding that with the pickups adjusted for an even balance across the strings, I'm able to run the bass control on the SL900 much higher than I've been doing with my 5-strings (an Ibanez ATK, and a self-made bass loaded with EMG 40P5's).
In fact, I was using the fretless for an acoustic set yesterday, and ended up with the bass at noon, the upper mids boosted very slightly, and the port plugs removed on my cab. I normally run the bass and low midbass rolled back to around 10 o'clock, one plug in, and an external parametric EQ in line to thin out the low mids.
Is this typical with fretless, and relatively vintage-voiced Jazz pickups in particular?
