I like what you are thinking /I really have no need at this time for two.. this amp is reliable.. if i cant break it, it would nearly impossible for anyone else to.. lol .. sad but true

Hey Kirk,
I think you also have to look at the quality of the basic design and components when you compare pre-amps.
The new API 550 channel strip sell for $2,800 (and there is no power amp with it).
Had a few minutes earlier today and tried no EQ no contour and had to turn the treble off!
I don't ge for a dark tone either so clearly the contour must make it all happen.
Also tried adding a bunch of mids to make the P a little more burpy.
This type of EQ works great with my SVT and SWR but the Q of the filter seems tight and more than a tiny bit of mids didn't sound so good.
OTOH, it kicks like a mule! I don't use any distortion pedals but the overdrive channel sounds really good.
So far I can get the MBF800 to sound similar to the Magellan but not the other way around.
I need to spemd some real time tomorrow to learn more. Thanks for the suggestions.

Looking forward to some NAMM reports!

What happens if you use some Contour A at about 9 to 10 o'clock
Then dip mids a few dB with freq at about 8:30 or 9 o'clock

Oh. I dont have that new API .. Looks nice. I have an older maybe 20 - 25 years api 512.. I got it used when a studio was liquidating its old stuff to get new stuff. Think i paid $100
It was before people thought OLD mic pres would become vintage and wanted

You live in my preferred neck of the woods.... Wine Country!!!
I got into making wines several years ago and have been lately experimenting with different fruit blends. Currently, I have in the 2nd fermentation stage Banana/Mango, Apple/Kiwi, and what I call Dirty Rice! One of my favorites is Banana!!!

Okay --- back to our normal Talk Genzler programming!!!

Yes... Santa Rita Hills Pinots and Chards are among the best anywhere. Great Rhône varietals too.

we do have access to small production and wine clubs. generally not lower but we do get instances where producers have to free up warehouse space and sell off selected wines at lower prices.
if you come out this way, I'm always looking for excuses to be a guide.
paso robles is a great area to visit too
