Genzler Amplification Club

I finally got to use my BA10-2 and BA12-3 stack with my 90s band (debut show!). I’ve used them with my classic rock band, and filling in other classic rock styles, and they worked well, but I probably would have preferred a little bit of speaker breakup with those groups. I of course EQed it like a classic rig rolling off lots of high end on my B Amp. But with the 90s band, I was looking forward to seeing how it’s full range sound was. WOW! The low end was so clean, full, and responsive. We practice at a studio that has 810 ampegs, so I’m never really that happy with how it sounds. These BA cabs performed beautifully. The B string sounded amazing, even though it’s a 30” scale bass, where the B can lose focus easily. We were running everything through the PA, but even still, with it being outside, I never felt like I was even close to running out of volume with only the 10 and 12.

Every cab has strengths and weaknesses, but I’ll take eqing a little to make these cabs sound vintage because the full range sound is just SO good. (Btw if anyone has any additional suggestions of how to get a thick tubey sound with the B Amp and BA cabs, I’d love some feedback).

Kudos to you and your team, Jeff. You really have some amazing equipment.

The secret to getting vintage/thick/tubey tone with the B|Amp lies in the Variable High and Low Pass Filters (VHPF/VLPF), the variable rate compressor, and some slight OD or distortion, and also the speaker profile selection. PM me and I'll send you a "recipe" that works very well with my Berg HDN cabs, which are likely in the same ballpark clarity-wise as the BAs.

I'm really, really intrigued by the BA cabinets! Would love to hear some side by side comparisons using the same size/configuration of BAs vs Nu Classics (115 vs 115, 210 vs 210, stack vs stack, 112 vs 112) using the exact same bass, amp settings, mike placement, etc.!

My main rig is made up of the BA cabs 410-3/210-3. I also have the 15-3. I got to demo the NC-210T/115T as well. Great cabs and could easily cover any size gig!

BA = Modern, 3 Dimensional
NC = Classic, Focused

Both sound amazing with the MG800. You can’t go wrong with either. May I suggest both! :cool:

How does the BA 410-3 play with the BA 115-3? Does the the 410 dominate/overshadow the 115 or is there still a discernable difference in tone that the 115 adds? I've read a lot about how many of the popular 410-over-115 rigs of yesteryear were severely mismatched because the 410 has so much more surface area than the 115. But I have to say in Andy Irvine's demo of the BA cabs, he plays those together and the 15 does seem to add some richness compared with the 410 + 210 config.

can’t comment on the sound because I haven’t tried it, but the 410 is 4 ohms and the 15 is 8 ohms, so the power will be appropriately divided with twice as much going to the 410 as the 15.

I have both.
I love the pairing of the 15-3 and the 410-3.
Because I have casters on my 410-3, I always have the 15-3 on top.
And because of that (I think) and the Slant of the 15-3, I always hear both cabs, and both blend well.
When I play outdoor gigs I will take either the 15-3 with the 410-3, or my 12-3 with the 410-3, the main difference being how much room I have in my vehicle (not really a tone decision at that point).
For Zeppelin, since I have keys gear and bass gear, I usually benefit from the smaller footprint of the 12-3 in my SUV.
That's full disclosure for you.

When I have my BA410-3/210-3 together it sounds like 610s.

When I have my BA410-3/15-3 together it sounds like one multi-driver cab.

I do not hear one cab loader than the other! That’s what you get when matching Genzler cabs and amps!

As cool as the array cabs are, there is something about the voicing of that NC-115T that just works for me. I've seen this cab used in stacks with the 210 and 212 but does anyone use a pair of NC-115T's as a 215 stack and have anything to say about how that is working out?

I’m running mine before my 4 on the Floor. I use the 4otF set on 2nd gear, as an always on pedal for anything rock/classic rock that we play. Gain set so that I get a touch sensitive light overdrive.

The Crash Box I have mainly set on 3rd gear, with the gain set higher so it gives me a fairly aggressive distortion when I kick it on. One thing I’ve noticed (and love) about the Crash Box is that, all other settings staying the same, it’s 100% usable across all 4 “gears”, giving me 4 different drive/distortion sounds with the only tweaking being switching one knob. YMMV of course, but I’m finding that to be really useful.

We play a huge variety of music, from Johnny Cash to Lizzo to Pink to Martina McBride to Ozzy to Blink 182 to The Weeknd to….well, you get the point.

The 2 Genzler drive pedals are very helpful in getting the sounds I need/want for a lot of the material we cover.

I’ll take a pic and post how I’ve got them set a little later.

I tried a NC115 with a different brand 15 and it performed as expected. In general, IMO almost nothing compares to the sound of dual 15s.

I have always been a "keep it clean" bass sound guy and have never really considered using a gritty bass tone either in the studio or live. But listening to a lot of isolated bass parts and working with a new producer has opened my eyes to the sonic benefits of overdrive, cutting through the mix and getting a lot of character with drive.

Question: if I really just want a little harmonic richness, and not nasty distorted tones, will my MG800 drive channel suffice? I do play in a loud hard rock band along with lots of other styles so that would be the primary application. But based on the amount of you buying and using the new Genzler pedals along with the MG800, I'd love to hear just why it's necessary? Mind you, finding reasons to buy new gear is not a challenge for me so it probably won't take much. Maybe even a good video or two would convince, especially "in context" as my producer likes to say.
