I have now had a bit of time to play a few basses and an EUB through the cab.
With the basses, what you put in is what you get out. My initial impression with a bass that I shall not name was one of mild disappointment (read on, Jeff!). Then I switched to my passive Lull P/J 5-string with Nordstrand pickups and everything came alive. The growl on lower notes is superb, and there is appreciably more weight at the lower end than for my previous 10" cab.
Then I tried my NSX EUB and this was the "moment". I have never heard it sound so good. I dialled out a touch of upper mids (frequency at around 1 o' clock) to get rid of the piezo sound, but it all sounds so smooth anyway that this is nothing like as necessary as it used to be. So how much of that "problem" upper mid in the NXT is the piezo pickup interacting with traditional speakers and tweeters? I don't have a cab with a tweeter to compare. It might also be the amp input impedance working for me, accept that I did not get this result feeding a Magellan 800 into another cab. The NSX is so convenient that getting it to sound so good with no effort justifies the wait for this combo.
What a superb design this little combo is. So the gig this weekend will the Magellan 350 10-2 combo, NSX EUB and a G&L jazz bass (this is not the sound that disappointed me - the G&L MJ-4 sounds excellent).
I am on the lookout for a double bass. (Boy, is that another challenge and a different world regarding cost and maintenance!) I cannot help feeling that the 350/10-2 is going to be superb for this application. In the meantime, it brings the NXT alive and makes for a very practical and portable combination.
