Finally got a rig picture. Series 2
BA-410-3 and BA-15-3 with Kinetix 800. Totally floored by this setup! I found it took some getting used to the gain settings. I was getting some tube distortion—which is cool—but I generally like a clean tone, and now with some tube character:)

I took this picture at the beginning of the gig— I like it to be pretty clean, so you can see the gain is up around 10 and I eventually reduced it to maybe 9:30. The volume next to that looks like I had about 1 o’clock, but I ended up reducing to about 11 o’clock, and the basic tone/gain was more what I’m after. I ended up boosting a fair amount of mids, high mids and treble— I think I eventually dialed back the mid knob. Our drummer is kind of loud so I use some earplugs and I imagine it was even more cutting without the plugs. I like an aggressive funk/rock bass tone for this band, and I play a lot of chords and leads, so I need the higher strings and pitches to shine through.

When I’m indoors, I find that the 4 x 10 covers it really well if it’s a live room and I need to cut more. Awesome full range sound. I often kick it back just a bit for better projection and more present mids and highs.

Outdoors I’ll add the 15 for the extra low end boom, especially with the lowest notes and drop A drop tuned on my 6 string. Definitely adds more weight and air to the bottom end, but not sounding slow. It also sounds surprisingly great as a standalone cab.

I do prefer using both cabs together whenever possible because it sounds just so complementary to my ears, but indoors I’ll just use the 4 x 10 a lot to save myself the cartage.

There’s something more “heavy” and weighty to the feel of the Kinetix vs the Magellan 800. I have the Magellan Pre pedal so I’ll probably sell the Magellan 800 (AND my Mesa WD-800) just to consolidate some gear…the pedal sounds great plugged into the Aux In on the Kinetix. Honestly, I had been digging the Mesa WD-800 more than the Magellan 800 for the upright, but now the Kinetix sounds just as good, especially on the Lean setting. I love having the simpler well chosen five bands of EQ instead of the endless tweaking I ended up doing on the WD-800. And, I was always craving one more band on the Magellan 800.

I feel that I can grow into this rig for years to come!

I don't know how.often you gig but a backup amp is a great thing to have. Personally I'd sale only one the two you mentioned. I doubt the Kinetix will fail but.things can happen outside your control.

The same thing happens if you switch from active to passive on a WD-800 (+10dB) and also my Ashdown ABM-500. All are switching input gain. Credit to the designers at Genzler for giving it a name that makes us think of it as another tone-shaping option instead of a set-and-forget utility switch. I actually prefer the Boost label, as I have never used the "active" setting on any amp (and fortunately never had problems). My G&L LB-100 pickup output is much higher than any active bass I have owned.

I had the WD-800 and now the Kinetix, both great amps in the same family but I just preferred the harmonic character of the Kinetix and its simplicity. I believe there is more going on with the boost switch on the Kinetix than just a typical active /passive switch as on a WD-800 but Jeff would be the one to clarify that.

series 1 vs 2 BA-10-2

Huge difference versus series one. Much broader response down low and up high. If you want to get beyond really present mids you will probably want to upgrade. The tens are the most different in my opinion, especially that little BA-10-2.

it will need to break in but you will hear the difference right away.

also curious about the series 2 BA–12–3 but I don’t need that size. Supposedly it goes lower, and definitely the 3” drivers extend much higher on all those series 2 cabs. I had a series one BA–15–3 and series one BA–210–3. The upper extension of series 2 is much superior for what I’m after. (upgraded to BA-410–3 and BA-15–3 series two)

also, the little BA–10–3 series 2 has the smaller 2” drivers that extend even higher (20k) than the 3 inch drivers (18k). Good stuff! My smaller rig of doom is that cab along with the new Gollihur model Acoustic Array Pro with the new series 2 speakers.

(this picture is actually the series one cabs, but they look almost the same; old ones had 2.5” drivers; series 2 has 2” drivers; a little lighter now)
