Get a haircut hippy!

So, I'm not a hippy. But for the past 17 years I've had long hair. NO, not a mullet, long hair. When it's tied back the pony tail is about to the middle of my back. Only recently have I started to explore my reasons for this.

Ran into a bit of bad luck a month ago or so, now I'm looking for a job. I can't find one, been on a few interviews, had a promising feel from ATT, but still nothing.

Several people have suggested that I cut my hair. I hope nobody laughs at this, it might seem silly to someone who has never had this type of hair style, but it's very traumatic to me. I mean, I may as well just cut off a foot.

Plain and simple, my girlfriend loves it,(the girls always have), I love it, I've actually got nice hair. I wouldn't even know what to do with short hair. I've never had to style it, i just tie it back and go. But now I'm starting to feel like it's time to do the deed. I've only a sneaking suspicion that it's keeping me from getting hired anywhere. People have always told me I should cut my hair before I go to an interview, but I've always had a job so I never worried about it.

For the record, I'm not trying to get some high profile 6 figure office job, but the ATT job is as installation technician, so there would be customer interaction.
I'm not gonna do a poll, but I would like to know what you all think, or if any of you have ever faced this. Am I being stupid? Shouldn't they just let me know at the interview that I will need to cut my hair? I hate to cut it just to find out the company has no rules regarding hair length.

If there are any employers or experienced interviewers that would like to chime in that would be great.

Id say if it's THAT long, yes, I think you should cut it.
I have long hair, it's just below my shoulders, but WAS below my armpits before my parents forced me to cut it (yes, quite literally forced). People seem to hate the fact I have hair this long, I can't imagine what getting a job must be like with hair THAT long. :hmm:

AHH. All of it? You think i could get away with at least shoulder length?

Alright, I just gotta breath. I was afraid that was the response I would get. Do you think I'd get an equally negative reaction if I shaved it cue ball style?

I don't even know what style is acceptible! Society and their damned rules. It's so ...confusing...will I have to use.....hair care products like gel and...*puke*...mousse?

I'm waiting another couple inches, so I can make another Locks of Love donation, but still be able to pull my hair back in a short tail. I ain't choppin' off my hair any time soon, but it definitely is getting too long for my tastes. I prefer it about shoulder-blade length, it's down in the middle of my back now.

If you DO choose to hack anything off, consider donating it so cancer kids can get wigs. It's totally worth it.

no wait, on second thought meet them half way, half cueball, half hippy.
TB's own John Turner was an early pioneer in that style:

Cut it, but spring 40 or 50 bucks and go to a salon where they can help you get a good style that fits your face and personality. You obviously don't have to go with a high-maintenance faux-hawk or anything stupidly trendy like that, but if this is your first time to cut your hair in ages, go on and splurge so you can get some good customer service and consultation on what will work for you.

Oh, and take some before/after pics for us!

I used to have long hair like yours. Didn't get a haircut for like 5 years, because I like long hair and I hate hairdressers (long story). I cut it in June because I just felt like having it short. Went from 2+foot hair to half an inch, which was quite a change for me, but at the end of the day it's hair, it's not a big deal.

pffft. guys don't use mousse any more. They use pomades and waxes and stuff like that. Gels and mousse makes hair crispy. Pomades and waxes leave hair pliable and more natural looking.

definitely go to a nice place where they can hold your hand through the whole process.

And if by cue ball it, you mean shave it, don't do it unless you're losing your hair.
