Not this weekend, but last Saturday's show.

We had a sub drummer who is a friend of mine that I knew would be brilliant, and he was. This show is an annual tribute to dead rock stars that happens the Saturday before Halloween. This was our tribute to Glenn Frey of the Eagles. He wrote this one.

Unfortunately you'll have to ignore the out of tune guitarist. We're working on that.

BTW, my wife bought the Hofner for me. I married way up and out of my league.

Indeed! Our lead singer is amazing. His background is mostly backing vocals for national acts, so he doesn't mind sharing center stage and I have the front person experience to make it work for both of us. I think the two of us make a good team up there.

Saw Gong live eons ago at a Hyde Park free concert.....I say "saw".....actually spent most most of the day somewhat whacked out, laying on my back and staring at the sky......

Seem to remember that Nico played that gig too....Oh! and Chapman Whitney Streetwalkers....

Will, have you ever tried a Hofner 500/1? Bass is light, neck is thin, and they come in lefty version.

I played a '63 Hofner Beatle bass with dead flats for several years. Light weight, very thin neck. So easy to play. Great tone. Powerful pickups. Some neck dive.

Add a wide, padded strap and you' ll barely feel it.

I just wish their necks didn't need so much attention.

I find that leaving the instrument in the case when not playing helps a lot with seasonal climate change. In the winter when it is drier, I leave the more delicate instruments in their cases in a closed clothes closet where they are more protected from the drafts of leaking windows. It's difficult to control the temperature when the sun heats a room in the afternoon and at night it's way colder. Any isolation helps.

Mine stands up well to temperature changes. The necks are hard maple. Construction varied over the years.

That's why P's and Ric's never worked out for me. I have shorter stubby fingers and the Ibanez basses were perfect for me-- to this day. There are only two wider neck basses I'm working with-- fixer-uppers that I own-- an Ibanez P-bass clone and an Ibanez Music Man clone. Both are lighter and streamlined and have a wider neck. Their string nut width is 41mm which is acceptable for me, because the necks are shallow.

One neck (MM copy) needs to go to warpedneck.com and the other needs a new P pickup. I'm undecided about what brand at this time but it might be a higher output Fender P.

In full agreement on the short/stubby fingers, which is why I love my Gibby necks so much. The TBird is long but skinny.

Paul Desmond had the sweetest tone I've ever heard come out of an alto.
I got to meet and chat with Morello* and Wright after a 1964 concert in Miami. Couple of really nice guys to 3 teenagers who managed to get up on stage. (we couldn't get close to Brubeck and Desmond)
*most 'musical' drummer ever.
