What I see in the course of my work is efforts in education are more likely to be met with success when the students' livelihood depends on learning the new material. Their choice, really. Just a job to me. The only difference is I get to leave (and do it all over again somewhere else).

I agree with that statement. Too many folks think that if you ban all guns, that crime will goes away. Let's look at Chicago. Non law enforement or military personnel are not allowed to own a gun in the Windy City. Well if guns are illegal there, then why are there so many shootings there?

If you outlaw guns, then only outlaws will have guns. We need to make sure that back round checks are done and that only responsible, law abiding citizens own them. I am not some NRA gun nut nor do I support the reasoning of having automatic weapons, but I do believe I have the right to carry my S&W 9mm as much as I have a right to carry my Fender P bass.

@GonePlaid, I am not sure if that is where you were going with your comment, but, hey, we all got our own opinions.

I was intentionally keeping it noncommittal. Let's say there are some folks who think "might makes right". Even if they're wrong.

There was a big protest last weekend by people who are against wearing masks. They were VERY vocal and in close proximity to one another to make their point.
Me thinks, ‘tis the season of the stink-eye.

Natural selection usually takes care of people like that.

I have fear of heights also, I just do what I do when putting up ham antennas (nowhere near that high) I just don't look down.

I bet this guy makes some dough but I guess the pay scale is not as high as you think it would be for these guys (or girls) , starting pay at some places is lower than McDonald's workers.

You put up HAM antennas? Let me know when you are back in the US and on the West Coast! I've been wanting to get back into this ever since my 11 meter days with a SSB and a self made, four element quad. Had a (hinged) crank up tower at exactly the right height...during skip (without a boot) was able to talk to Australia and other places. All with the legal 5 watts. Having half channels helped .

Which reminds me ... I never knew it was possible to get lost on a mountain until (you know). Right, there's up, and there's down, so .... but it doesn't actually work that way because very big mountains are indeed Very Big Mountains. There's really not a great deal of story to it except at once point the only thing remaining to drink is maple syrup.

There's really not a great deal of story to it except at once point the only thing remaining to drink is maple syrup.

I have an old tube transmitter that puts out 100 watts on 11 meters. Heathkit DX-100, weighs 100 lbs but it gets out very good, it's an AM transmitter. I was mainly on 160 and 80M.
I always use dipoles. I use dipoles for long distance AM radio Dxing too. A friend and I put up a 1000' dipole in the woods behind my father's house in MA. I used to pick up LW stations from Europe every night, it finally got blown down and I haven't put it back up. I still have a couple of 500 footers up though, they're half wave dipoles centered on about 940 khz for the AM band. I've gotten a lot of european AM stations with those antennas. I use a slingshot with a Zebco fishing reel on it to get over the trees. We used to call it tree-fishing.

Remember...it is not the fall that will kill you...it is the sudden stop.....

The sudden stop isn't as interesting as the amount of time to think about things on the way down, I imagine. What I very clearly recall are daily tales of people whose plans didn't work out the way they believed they would. For our instructor was a mountain rescue team member. With a very good memory. All of the stories are pretty hairy but some even more than others. One that comes to mind is a roped team whose descent flossed everyone off the rock.

I lived in Vermont for a few years during the mid 90's and worked for a farmer who lived on a mountain and used to harvest maple syrup. He had tubes coming out of the trees and running down the mountain into a place where they boiled it down into syrup. You would not believe how good that stuff tastes while it's still boiling, dark amber was the best. His place was on a famous trail and I can't remember the name of it. OK, Appalachian trail.

I like DX engineering, not cheap though. That would be cool though, I've also wanted to get into 630M 472-479 khz, you pretty much got to make your own transmitters for that though.
