Well I'm home sick for a second day. For some reason my allergies have been horrible this year. Took Mucinex and I'm getting ready to take Claritin. I don't know if this happens to some of but my nose _vibrates_ to the point of driving me crazy, with the continuous draining. Sheesh! I could use a break!

My allergies bug me so much I have all but given up wearing my contact lenses in the summer. My wife and I use Zyrtec-D and it works really well for allergies. No prescription needed but you need to get it from behind the counter at your local drugstore.

Just the name of the mountains, The Panamint Range, sounds forbidding. The only reason I would want to go in there is with a camera. And real film. And water. Water is heavy, as any who's gone backcountry knows. Or learns.

I've been to the Panamint Valley a few times (this is the valley just to the west of DV). We camped near Darwin Falls and hiked to the (real, with falling water-not to be confused with the house by a similar name nowhere near there) falls. It was very lush in that area compared to the desert that surrounded it. I have the real film-based photographs to prove it, too (not pixelated®, sadly) in glorious black & white, made with my old Hasselblad 500C.

Speaking of mines, another time, we drove up a couple of side valleys to check out old gold mines (World Beater Mine, and Clair Camp). Not to mention, we've been to Ballarat, a beautiful old town in the PV.

Paid our respects to Charles, too.

I have my own versions of that area, near Zabriskie Point, heading down Gower Gulch. This is in the gulch, looking north towards Zabriskie Point.

Black and white is such an expressive format. Just looking at some Henri Cartier-Bresson work on Monday. Slumming it, myself, over in 35 mmLand and Tri-X is my friend. Sometimes played with a Minolta, but no Henri Cartier-Bresson I.

I spent a lot of time with Weegee photos. Brilliant. Mind-numbingly brilliant. Raw pictures of very recently deceased gangsters on the pavement don't sell newspapers like they used to. The gift of a photojournalist is the ability to reach people with poor reading skills. There are some photographs we never forget.

For me, the Leica was a perfect tool. Quiet enough to use on a set, even with an autowinder! A 35mm and a 90mm is everything that is required. Two camera bodies and off we go.

Being on the other side of the camera never suited me, but that's what's apparently necessary here in 2020, the Year of the Defective Whoopee Cushion

What? Saved up all those coupons. Spent all those days waiting for my model to arrive. Then spend hours gluing it together. Now you are telling be it never happened. I am devastated. I may never believe anything again...

I thought that all the wooden structures had burned down a number of years back (maybe 2010) - most of the stone was still standing. It was right after the Park Service had done some major renovation IIRC. Most of my California desert time was at Ridgecrest and Mojave.

Don't know when the AtlasObscura photos were taken, but the accompanying text verifies you've got a fine memory.

In 2008 a search of the site was conducted looking for the remains of additional Manson family victims, long rumored to have been buried by Barker Ranch. Though bullet casings were found, no new remains were uncovered and the dig was called off. In 2010 much of the wooden structure of Barker Ranch and the infamous vanity in which Manson hid himself burned down. The stone structures are still standing.

I am very fond of the grim beauty of the desert.

Borax is used to make an oxide layer on aluminum when making capacitors. Excellent for making laundry smell nice as well as clean. It’s good for killing mold.

I also like that it’s a product that my great grandmother would have used. That and a bar of yellow sunlight soap which I also use on my hands and as a spot cleaner.

Those are big wagons. They haven’t used them since the 1800’s.
