Get off my LAWN! "Grumpy Old Farts"

(especially as the challenges for me to return to Europe are :: grits teeth :: a bit dodgy right now)
My candy man (retired) friend managed to get back to Greece last month. It did take quite an effort, for various reasons that probably don't affect you (a couple passports in different names, for one - same name, actually but one in 'Murican, the other in Greek [Zeus, or Heracles, don't recall which, at the moment]).

The world was more black and white back then. People quietly fulfilled the expected roles that society imposed, the world moved on.
Color caused a lot of problems when it came into popular usage.
Also medicine has come a long ways. What killed people 100 years ago, now just takes a doctor's visit...
FIFY

Four words — low speed dental drills.

As a victim of 1970s British probe, pick, create cavity where none existed before, drill and mercury amalgam fill dentistry, I'm down to 24 teet and counting. Most that came out did so because they were mostly fillings repairing older fillings and simply crumbled.

I am also reminded of the Movie Marathon Man, in which the hero, played by Dustin Hoffmann, gets interrogated (tortured) by a Nazi played by Laurence Olivier. Probably not safe to paste the YouTube clip on this gentile forum...

Oh oh oh oh...I clicked "like," but I could have gone at least forty more years without thinking of that scene...

When I was about eight I had very extensive work done on a molar in Athens, by a very nice female Greek dentist. The slow cable-and-gear-driven drill, the "just lift your finger if it hurts" (I was waving my arm in the air), and the NO anesthetic. My father took me to a big toy store afterward.

On the subject of dentists, one of the far back branches of my male family line includes one Giles Heale. He was the ship's surgeon on the Mayflower.

Obviously he couldn't stand the Puritans because he took the money he made, returned to England and set up as a dentist on London's Fleet Street. He died childless, we don't know what of, but probably something nasty.

Still when some a-hole says something unpleasant about me moving to the US, only second or third generation themselves, I can point out my family got here long long long before theirs.

Well GOF's I feel very embarrassed. In my haste to set up my new bass, I grabbed a 9 volt from our utility room that was in an open package. I went to the store today and bought a brand new Duracell. Instantly the bass came to life. It turns out the battery in the package had been sitting for a long time on the shelf and the new one I put in today was fresh. Now I'm sorry I spilled my guts all over the GOF thread about this issue. Man, the bass sounds so awesome now. I truly am happy. This one is now a keeper!

Good news and a lesson learned.

Sometimes dastardly sellers install worn out tubes before shipping an amp. I once bought an SVT that turned out to have every tube but the right ones installed. Maybe they do the same with the battery.

You never know. The surgeons were also barbers. The two biggest causes of death on ships were scurvy and constipation.

The usual conversation

Going somewhere nice for your vacation then?

And the parting

Something for the weekend, sir?

Both must have fallen flat on those bloody Puritans. TBH the regular English probably thought "good riddance of those bloody miserable puritans, with a bit of luck they'll probably never make it past the Fastnet Rock" - which, if you look at the voyage history and how one ship in the group, the Speedwell, nearly sank between Portsmouth and Plymouth nearly came true...
