I've been 'detained' twice. And they're oddly connected.I got "detained" in NYC in 1973. Their standards were a little lower. Two slices of fairly stale bread and a slice of cheese..........dry. Breakfast lunch or dinner depending on the time of day you got picked up. Yum. That was at the police stations and court houses. The detention centers were not much better. I spent about a month there (unable to make bond.) I remember asking a guard at meal time "What is this?" His answer was "Food , eat it." I was released at the first preliminary hearing , no evidence. Wrong place at the wrong time.
Hmph! Kinda cheesy.I've been 'detained' twice. And they're oddly connected.
Second time first. Janesville, Wisconsin. Winter. Heavy snow. Out partying late. Three other guys in my car. 3am. Headed out to the Oasis on I-90 for some coffee. Managed to do a 720 turning into the parking lot. Wound up facing a city cop. I pulled into a spot and he pulled in behind me. I got out immediately, because, well, open containers and open baggies. Looking at doing some time. He stayed in his squad, unaware of my passengers and consumables. He was going to let me go with a warning, but, oops, I missed a possession court date in Milwaukee some months back, so I had to accompany him to the station. In his squad. We sat in a big room doing the interview. The Milwaukee charge was a misdemeanor, and I was told the bail would cover the fine, so I treated it like a parking ticket, and blew off the court date. But since it was a possession misdemeanor, I was supposed to show up anyway. While we were talking, a couple of other cops brought in a hilarious drunk who'd managed to drive his car at full speed into the only light pole in a very large parking lot. The cop talking to me went over and joined in that fun, forgetting about me. After a bit, I got up and walked out, never to hear from the Janesville cops again. I managed to get back to my car about 5am. My 2 brothers and a friend were all still passed out. Knuckleheads.
First time. Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Summer. Beautiful day on the lakefront. My buddy and I were going to a concert on the Summerfest grounds and stopped in an open area by the beach for a toke or two before entering the grounds. I was sitting in my car with the windows down, shaving some hash into a pipe when two hands came through my window with handcuffs. Bastidges. Got my stash. Got my pipe. But not my buddy. He had nothing on him. They walked me through the concert grounds, laughing at my misfortune, pointing out over 20 undercover cops (male and female) working the concert...at which no one had yet arrived. I don't remember names well, but faces? Those idiots showed me every undercover cop in Milwaukee!!! Came in VERY handy at future concerts. I was the watchdog for whichever group I was with. They held me for awhile at the grounds, and then took me 'downtown', throwing me in with a bunch of most excellent other losers. Didn't post bail until 1am. Also forced my buddy to wait all that time to make my bail. Bastidges. The police chief at the time was 75 and quite senile, but the city council in Milwaukee were afraid of him, and left him in his job.
Don't miss Wisconsin.

It's the Masons.

(but you knew that)When I got back from the Army, I found out that the FBI had sent agents to my town to interview peeps regarding my needed Top Secret/Crypto clearance. Talked to my high school teachers. And neighbors. And who knows who else.Cleared every single background check the world was able to squeeze me through. It's unreal what some employers ask <ahem ask as in require> ... background financials, talk to the neighbors, visit for tea, oh yeah and the hair test. One snip with the scissors and the chemists know everything about me, including if I get enough green vegetables. Now at 64 years, I call this a disagreeable way to start a good relationship with the people who are so deep in trouble that they have to pay me to work for them.
Everything's clean, spic and span all around, laundry's done, Odin helped make the bed. Oh and it's equinox(but you knew that)

What I found interesting was the one question they were asked that they remembered. Uncanny, really, that a number of different people would share the same question.
"Would you lend him money?"
A pretty good question, actually.
For the curious, I did get my clearance.![]()
Yeah, I got my TS clearance in '67. After I got outta the Navy in '68, I never even thought about asking around who got questioned. However, what they didn't know didn't hurt me.That may be a good question here but, what about in Russ...oh, never mind...

They lent him a LOT of money. Own him, they do.That may be a good question here but, what about in Russ...oh, never mind...
You have my blessing, child, to be free from them all.I don't even know how many NDAs I'm bound to any more...

The[stuff]that might've been secret/top secret, etc. in '68 has been pretty well documented by now although I did get to see the results of some fairly large SNAFU's back then. Too wordy for here and not all that interesting.I don't even know how many NDAs I'm bound to any more (besides all of them, I mean an integer). Happily for all concerned, none of those NDAs were signed for <ahem> lapses of personal discretion, or lapses of dignity. And also happily, there's nothing under legal lock and key in my field anyone cares about now.

Mine all became pretty much moot when the Berlin Wall came down. And when Germany reunited, I was able to stay in the nice old hotels in the former East Berlin and walk on the Linden Straße! Sehr kuhl! The[stuff]that might've been secret/top secret, etc. in '68 has been pretty well documented by now although I did get to see the results of some fairly large SNAFU's back then. Mrs. Tango came down to the Command Center a while ago with a most excellent gin & tonic, and is now upstairs preparing an omelette. The guy I don't want to win is going to win the U.S. Open golf tourney, but hey, I got to see that wonderful Winged Foot golf course once again, so all is well.Cleared every single background check the world was able to squeeze me through.
