Another thing that is making me grumpy is that the music scene in my area appears to have fallen into the waste land.. I am bout to just give up on playing.. sell everything but one bass and say the heck with it..

Thinking about satellite service since DSL is now neck and neck with dial-up. Anybody have good/bad experience with providers?
I've been on Frontier/Verizon for ages. I usually get at least close to what I pay for in terms of Gb/sec (3Gbps plan). Cable co. here sucks and I won't deal with them. I have a dish for TV, which I never watch anyway. Were supposed to get fiber, but the company running the glass keeps telling me lie after lie after lie. My brother lives in an upscale neighborhood, so they hooked them up fast. Not much incentive in the ghetto so I wait impatiently. He gets phone, TV and Internet through one fiber connection, and I read 60 Gbps there on wireless n (IIRC it was n). ~$120/mo. and he gets better TV, phone and really fast Internet. Less than I pay for a dish, phone line and Internet, so as soon as they feed me a glass line, I'm all over it.Here, just grumpy struggling with internet that's not performing as advertised... when it's performing at all

Don't do that! 2 months without complaining about weather or aches and pains and B-string can bump you up to the highest GOF number without warning! Not my rules. I just misquote them.

Yeah.. well I am a lil bummed right now.. I can say that! I haven't much faith that I will find a decent group of folks to play music with..

Same promises for fiber here, no cable and I'm at the end of the DSL run back to the CO, so it's not very reliable.

I have Exede. For me satellite is the ONLY game in town as I live extreme rural. Overall I have been happy with it but the data limits are not realistic. The plan with the late-night free is pretty cool but max normal use is 25GB, which I use fairly fast. I just switched to the "liberty pass" plan gaining to 30 GB. And if you go over ALLEGEDLY it will still be usable; but no late nite free. Just think of windows updates for 4 main computers and two laptops, video editing software downloads, upkeep on 5 Android devices, a chromebook hacked to run Linux, website editing & uploads for 5 websites and you see where the problem lies with Satellite. When fiber is available, I highly recommend that you consider it.
My finer service handles the phones, tv, and internet. Internet reliability was my concern which is why I switched from high speed modem. It's always connected, there has been no downtime in the last three years.
Internet speeds are limited by the plan that you purchase. I have the standard service. In internet speed tests, download was over 25Mbps, upload speed over 11Mbps, about half. It's more than fast enough. At home, the cell phones connect to the fiber optic server rather than a cell tower. TV and cell phone usage does not affect the internet speeds, the server has more than enough bandwidth to handle everything.
4G is supposed to be ten times faster than 3G. 4G is rated 5 to 12Mbps download, half that for upload. I find that it is slower, pages load slowly rather than bang, they're there link with fiber. I think this is due to high network traffic.
The TV images are crystal clear, no noise, dropouts, or speckles like I had with cable and satellite.

I have about 20 roaming laptop users. We get them I think verizon that works off cell towers. It's pretty fast, but not so cheap. Good thing is with a latop, if you get a signal, you're good to go. I think 4LTE is the speed you need. I have it on my phone. Usually get a 3 LTE signal about anywhere, which is fast enough. We had a couple of remote people, like really out in the sticks, and they could only use satellite, and had constant problems. Once they got the LTE gizmo, they were good to go. Not sure what they have now, but they started with a usb dongle in their laptops and a small rechargeable gizmo they just kept in their laptop bag. I know Virgin mobile sells one for about $100 + the monthly fee to use it. My outside users love the verizon gizmo. They can get a really good connection to work by VPN and do anything from the field. If either of you are interested, I can find some details. Basically a cell phone connection, and you pay about cell phone rates. Probably double cable/dish/DSL. Pretty good reliability too... as good as a phone.

I have 10GB plan on phone but it suks as I almost never have good enough signal and when I do it is 3g - on a 4g lte phone. And I would have to root in order to tether a laptop - but no use in doing so.
I get grumpy just thinking about it.

I hear yah. Friend out in the sticks gets 4G on either carrier until you turn off the highway 1/2 mile from his house. His only viable option is radio. I guess everything doesn't suck about my ghettohood.

Interesting, I am at ~200k down & up when it's working. 1.5M down is fast enough for everything I do, I just need better reliability and stability.
If you can get 3G or 4G on your cell phone, it might be worth looking into. Link Removed What really sucks about it is $50/mo for 6 GB max per month. Who wants to keep track? Maybe there is a better deal on a similar connection elsewhere. Pretty sure the guys at work get Verizon. Maybe they have a better deal if you buy their phone service, sell you soul to them, etc. Virgin used to have a gizmo that just plugged into the USB to do this. I didn't see that now. Guys at work have a little box from Verizon that they just leave in their laptop bag, and charge it off a USB port if needed. Maybe a viable option if you need good speed periodically. With virgin phones, you can also "teather" your phone to your laptop. The app comes installed on their phones, but I've never used it.
I hate posting from a phone or other imitation computers. Give me a damned keyboard!

Who the heck is pokin' me? Been adjusting to new meds, hate meds, but life without them is pretty darn grumpy.

As mentioned above if you get 4G at your house I have a couple friends running Sprint 4G modems that are darn decent.
Sucks when you look at a treadmill with more affection than you do your bed.
I should have added, you can test your computer's internet speed here: Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test. There are other similar sites as well and apps available that do the same thing.

You know.. with that talk about fiber.. and a good connection.. reminded me I am going to have to be more mindful of the use of fiber! A lil more of it wouldn't be a bad idea! As for watching TV.. I am finding that I watch less of it.. about the only thing that I do watch is baseball and road races.. that is pretty much it.. well Deadliest Catch!
