There are some that always have to be playing with their knobs. ..... Behind the console, there are those that continually have to micro-adjust everything.

My brother in law did some photoshop work today. My wife doesn't like this picture. She said it makes me look like Pigpen of Peanuts fame playing bass. I'm very much like Rodney Dangerfield - I tell ya. I don't get any respect.

A certain Ralph Steadman to it. Great set, thanks for the smack!

In an episode of dear old M*A*S*H, Hawkeye and B.J. are messing with Winchester by periodically swapping articles of his uniform for ones that don't fit. Winchester leaves the tent after finally buttoning his trousers, which have mysteriously become too tight in the waist. Hawkeye asks B.J.what he's going to do to Winchester next. He replied, "Starting tomorrow, he gets taller." One of my favorite lines in the whole series.

In Real Life ™ at a newspaper that no longer exits the editor — as in, the editor, not "an" editor or "managing" or "executive" editor, the editor — was notoriously late with his Sunday oped column. What that means IRL ™ (again) is nobody can go home until he signs off his page for camera. That's the whole of the composing room, and the whole of the newsroom editors, stuck, with minutes counting to make it to the lemonade stand. The lemonade stand proprietors and the newspaper staff have an arrangement — if we can make it in before last call, we are welcome to remain as long as we wish. The local constabulary is respectful of these agreements.

It might appear the editor's express intent to save us from such debauchery on a Saturday night, if one doesn't presume he is simply an idiot. The truth likely straddles both extremes.

It is the composing room manager believed to behind the mysterious advance of the big hand on the wall clocks (this predates satellite-synchronized time on the computer terminals). It is the composing room manager believed to be behind the minute (but over time, significant) changes in the editor's chair seat height. &c.

That any might question the composing room manager's good name is calumny. And not even recalling the time the publisher's shoes were painted. Which they certainly weren't. Not on Johnny's shift anyway. ;)

These are the small things that allow the intolerable to be bearable for short stretches.
