Get off my LAWN! "Grumpy Old Farts"

Being a fledging chemist I used to make my own gun powder. One part charcoal, one part sulphur, one part saltpeter (potassium nitrate). Oddly enough, all things that I would buy at the pharmacy. Although only after a stern warning from the druggist.

Lore has it that the military used to put saltpeter in food to lower the soldiers libido. Not true, it doesn't do that. Antihistamines like Benadryl, Dramamine, and Phenergan can cause erectile dysfunction. So lay off those products.

Hmm. I can 'lay off' the allergy pills and and sneeze a lot but avoid ED. Or, I can not sneeze and hack and not scare off potential partners but not be able to 'do anything'.

It's the House of Borromeo who built Isola Bella (Beautiful Island) on Lago Maggiore. They're the unicorn happy people. An entire hallway of the palace is decorated with unicorn tapestries. Sewn by handmaidens, no doubt. What I said upon seeing the gardens is not repeatable here.

Also not repeatable here are my views on people trying to blow me up.

While watching Star Trek: Enterprise, I asked my computer to list Darwin's living descendants, it just sat there. Seems that it hasn't evolved far enough to perform such a task.

Further, he was tone deaf.
Musical Assumptions: Darwin the Musician

I, like others, stuggle with the definition of tone deafness. I have a son-in-law who is a genius with things electro-mechanical and loves music. He spent middle school and high school playing saxophone in the school bands and helps a friend DJing parties. But when he tried to "pick-up" bass guitar (I don't think he really tried to learn), he couldn't get very far at all! I tried very hard to teach him, but he couldn't/wouldn't remember squat! And, when he thinks he's "singing" it's like nails (of any kind, lots of them!) on a chalkboard!

I think he's tone deaf. Yet his mother swears he always made As in band class. Yet there's no known incident or injury since then to explain now. :wideyed:

I dunno.

Shopping for a new stereo amp to use with the PC and music stuff.

Stumbled across this set of "specs" on a well known brand for their least expensive amp. I'm sure it's a good product but cut the BS! Smartass comments in Italics are mine.

Anti-Standing Wave Insulators

The Anti-Standing Wave Insulator features
a special form with no parallel sides inside (they are round)
to prevent cavity resonance (and probably solid). This makes the
sound localisation, tone, and scale clearer,
while also contributing to seamless connection
between the channels and improved
response to quick sound. (I think I need a shovel for the BS here)

Non-Magnetic Material Speaker Terminals (pretty sure ALL terminals on ALL amps are non-magnetic, you know, like tinned copper or brass)
The speaker terminals use non-magnetic material,
which is less susceptible to external noise, and
transmits signals to the speakers at high purity. (I guess you would need a purity meter to measure this?)

Happy birthday Charlie.

Charles Darwin was born February 12, 1809. A distinguished man who often got food in his beard. He ate the animals that he studied. He married his first cousin and they had ten children. He was taken down by a bug bite that left him infected with a parasite. The parasite led to heart disease.

I read only about half of Origin of Species as it was a difficult read with his writing style which caused me to keep rereading passages to understand the points he was making as he recorded his various observations in his journal while he traveled on the HMS Beagle to various locations.

Loved the whole movie, but really enjoyed that aspect of Master & Commander.

A lot of studio monitors are self powered these days. It would be good to look into that vs using a separate stereo amp. Focal from France are really nice, they make them from scratch (good youtube videos), Adam Audio are two. I like B&W speakers. They use them at Abbey Road Studios which is good enough for me.

I had the (deteriorating) drivers in my car replaced with Focal speakers and was quite impressed. My car came with a nice JBL amp and the pairing sounds great. I didn't know about the B&W/Abbey Road connection. You are a fount of interesting information.

I need a separate amp for input selection plus getting a couple of slightly smaller speakers to set on the desk. The Dynaco 10" 2-way are there now. Probably get a pair of JBL HLS610 2-way from ebay. I have the HLS series of speakers in the home theater and have been happy with them - 8" front, 2x5" center, 6" surround - along with a Cerwin-Vega 12" subwoofer.

I'm building a low profile stereo cabinet for the Dynaco preamp/amp and turntable and putting those along with the Dynaco speakers in the sunroom for a better LP listening environment.
